There is ZERO need for that for consumers (professionals, maybe, but not consumers) at this point in time. 4K monitors are nice at all at $3500 a pop, but no way you will need 12GB of memory until you start using 3+ 4K monitors. Eventually, maybe in the GTX 990Ti or beyond, sure, when 4K monitors fall below the $1000 mark, and especially when they hit the $500 mark, but not now ... not for awhile.

Sure, NV could do a 6gb version. It won't be at the $700 base cost though. Then again, 800-850 for a Titan-esque card isn't the worst deal of all time

The 6GB and 12GB versions are vaporware at this point and are pure speculation.
How is it an engineering failure?
Well the cooler is but the rest is pretty smashing.

oh, yah. $700 for a 3GB. makes the $1000 Titan look cheap.

Granted, 4K is crazy expensive. But it's also win on AMD's part that their cards dominate in performance comparison in 2-way crossfire/sli on 4K. Its also fail to tout 4K as useless benchmarking when triple 1080p or 1200p is almost as demanding and can be had for a tenth of the cost of a 4K monitor. People are realizing this and it is becoming more and more popular, hence why many reviewers do 3x1 performance comparisons- because people asked for them. 4K performance is relevant because of multi-monitor. And on multi-monitor/4K, the 290X owns the competition.

It's called business.

Like every 670/680, and 760/770 4GB single gpu owner.
