How do you know it will? The reason why 720p and 1080p took the market is due to everybody making the transition from cathodic tube to LCD (slim television).
The adoption of these tv was pretty fast because you could get rid of a large tv to get a much bigger one while taking less space.
So 4k will remain expensive for a while and it until you can get one <1000$, I don't think it will take the market as you said.
I got a 27'' 1200p screen. Perfect to write code, the only reason I would get a 1440/1600 is to get a bigger screen. Other than that, the resolution is a bit secondary factor for me. I don't see myself spending more than 600$ for a monitor.
