Processor for a home/small business server.

Thread Starter
I have a thread in the work logs for a custom case, but the hardware that fills it is kinda holding me up. I am def using it for file storage, media streaming, might use it for backup DHCP. Don't think I'll be putting AD on it, but it's a possibility. At times it could also be used for a UT3 server or a general game server. Hoping to run either Ubuntu Server x64 or Windows 2012 Data Center edition.

I know core count is important to a server, but at what speed should a CPU be running? I was looking at a Phenom II X4 Zosma or Deneb, or a Thuban. Not sure what Intel's offerings are for mid end.

Anything really, that's a pretty light requirement.

See, I'm used to seeing dual 6 or 8 core Xeons, so I'm not sure how much CPU the listed activities will eat up.

I just purchased the Intel Pentium Processor G3220 for mine. It also supports ECC if you need that for your server setup. I did with the FreeNAS server I'm building.
