i have a Amd 5850 that has been running non-stop for over 3 years now. Works perfectly. I think the lifetime of the hardware being degraded is minimal if you run the hardware within certain specifications and keep them below certain temperatures. Also having good power supplies to keep steady power to the hardware is important as well.

i work in research and i see everyday 1000's of dollar being wasted and people doing nothing of their day , i see it as a bit of a scam , they use you so that they can keep on wasting their budget ,...
why would they bother with the power bill and hardware cost , on an individual the cost can be seen as marginal but if you take the whole thing , they are saving a lot of money while people are loosing it.
i also question the need for these data NOW , when they could be easily computed in a few dozen of year with more efficient quantum or other kind of computer. the population is growing ressource and energy is getting rarer , we should think , do we need to feed 90% of the people or invent new medecine to prolong life of the other 10%.
folding or things like that will have little if no impact on most human life during your existence, and certainly not to the one that actually need help.

but anyway that's my point of view , it s up to anyone to make their choice.

(one exemple , at my work we use everyday very expensive cunsumable like seals and other kind of thing , they can be worth upwards of 200$ for one , and yet most of the computer we have to use are 300 gb harddrive and 4 gb ram dell turds that prevent us from doing many jobs. if you need better then you have no choice but to jump straight for the xeon with 12 mb cash , nvidia K 4000 , 64 gb of ram , in this case nobody will ever need this and they just wasted 2000 bucks, but that's how it works in research , if you don't spend the budget , you don't get as much next years. the places i have worked at are considered leader in their respective field)

Yup, its a BFG LS-450. not sure if it was the mobo or power supplys fault, hard to tell. PSU still works though.

I find your post most interesting. And I have thought about this many times. I have looked at the white papers and such of folding. But haven't been super impressed, specially, when they want to charge money to look at the entire paper.

I would like to be a fly on the wall at some of the research labs who get the folding results (as well as BONIC stuff) to observe.
1. Are they able to use the results to figure out anything useful.
2. Do they really appreciate the effort/expense of there donors. Also a bit of risk, as the OP could have burnt his office down.
3. Are they just jerking off and not really working or caring about doing any real research.

My feelings would be, at some labs, I would see serious research going on and scientist appreciating our work/effort, and other labs just playing around and maybe having a good laugh about what the donors gave.

At worst we are aiding someone obtaining a higher educational qualification, even if their research doesn't prove something specific, then it may lead to advances at the next iteration.

I watched a wi-fi AC video on Youtube last night and the jump in performance is due to clever people creating improved algorithms to speed communication, ( even if it is only at short range !).

Waste is present in every aspect of life/work, but using "suckers" to pay for the electricity is genius ! wink.gif

All IMHO
