7950 Crossfire shutting down PC

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I have an extremely frustrating issue that I've tried for two weeks to solve on my own, but now I'm turning to you for help.

I'm using two 7950 windforces in crossfire. The version with 1ghz stock core and 1x8pin 1x6pin. However, as soon as I start a game, my pc immediately shuts down. Not blue screen, not freeze. Powers off instantaneously, then reboots. One of the cards I've been using for years now, and it hasn't given me any problems. I've already replaced the new one to see if it was the culprit, and it's still happening. I have all three cards here now and have tried every combination of them, still the same issue. I ordered a replacement psu to get here tomorrow, I'll see if that's it, but I know I have more than enough power. Temps are fine, but there is one interesting issue. The second gpu is always at 99% usage when idle. No matter which of the three cards I use as the second gpu. I've used the 3 different beta drivers as well as the most recent whql. And yes, my temperatures are fine.

Gir, just posted this in another thread similar . . .

check and see if ULPS is enabled. Disable it if it is. Don't use the Overdrive. I don't even want CCC to be in my Startup program. You want to oc, use Trixx or Afterburner. Have a read . . .

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned in the OP that I have enabled, disabled, re-enabled, and re-disabled ULPS. Same thing every time. I'm not using overdrive or any OC'ing hardware. This is purely stock form. I've even tried undoing my CPU overclock to narrow it down.

@OP

Have you tried testing the cards individually? Maybe one of your card may be faulty.

Yes, I have tested all three individually. Not a problem. I can even have both cards hooked up in the system but not have crossfire on and it will work. But as soon as I turn on crossfire, crash when I go in game.

It sound like a motherboard problem,
It's annoying, but you need to check if can post, with onboard graphic card
Clear cmos, battery off for more than 3 minutes
Check memory ram slots, one at the time
Also check the cpu socket for bent pins
Try your new power supply
Nothing works? chat with ASUS representative for RMA the mobo.

Try a different crossfire cable? Also, see if you can run a single card from secondary pcie slot.

Well it turns out it was the PSU. Received the new one this morning and just tested it. Runs just fine, but there is a strange noise. I think it is normal coil whine, but is that louder than normal? It only occurs when I'm in a game. When I go back to a 2d application, it stops.

(might still be processing, sorry)

Came over this thread by chance, then I saw your name Gir! Been a long time heh..

Anyways, the coil whine is normal. But it was a bit loud. Coil whine usually comes under load, happens to PSU's and GPU's.
But it's nothing to worry about!

EDIT: Glad you got it working with the new PSU smile.gif
