Network icons not working in Windows 8

Thread Starter
I have shortcuts made for my movies that I keep on a file server so that I can change the icon for the shortcuts to be a thumbnail of the movie cover. Especially nice for kids so they can easily pick.

This worked flawlessly in Windows 7/Vista as shown in the following screen. This is what all users on my network will see on Windows 7.

Icon size changes per profile and such, but they all get nice pictures.

However, this is what all users get on Windows 8.

Bleh...

I can't think of anything locally that should effect this...the permissions all come for the server. Any one heard of anything that might be causing this?

Bumping this...really confused by this.

Think there is a local GPO that might be needed for this in windows 8? Currently there are none and everything is inherited from the the Domain Controller.

Maybe run in compatibility mode for 7? since the server is more compatible 7? I assume. I guess the manual workaround would be to just upload the thumbnails yourself if you have to. There is also a check box that says enable for sky drive files as well check that out under compatibility. Just right click all the thumbnails and check that box.

I will check that...but I thought the compatibility mode only effected the program the shortcut launched. I will play with the compatibility settings though.

I know all the skydrive stuff is disabled, though.

I guess it isn't that big of a deal. Windows 8 is only on my main rig and I don't watch movies at the desk all that often. When I get a new movies I typically setup the shortcut and thumb nail on that machine though. Some times the .ico image isn't made right or the original picture just isn't good enough for the conversion so I like to go preview the thumbnail to make sure it looks right. Right now I have to do this on another machine.

It is more of a future thing...one day I might have all my machines running Win8 and then this will be a very big deal.

I think I ought to bump this...I never was able to get this to work. I've been ripping Blurays on my Win 8 machine and then using a Win7 machine to make the shortcuts so I can see the shortcut after I make it.

I can't be the only person in the world doing this.

Can you explain what you are doing more clearly?  My understanding is that your video files are stored on a server computer that you are accessing over a LAN.  What format are the videos in?  Where are the shortcuts, on the server machine (accessed over the network) or on a local machine?  What is the target on the shortcut files?  If the shorcuts are to work over the network, the target must be a network path, not a local path (i.e. "\\MyServer\Videos\VideoFile1.mp4" instead of "E:\Videos\VideoFile1.mp4").

The Video formats are mostly mkv...but there are a few others that I've tried just to see if there was a difference in the rip (I've gone back to just using mkv now days). That doesn't seem to effect anything with the issue at hand though.

These video files are on a server and the shortcuts are on stored on the server. Then the icon for the shortcuts are changed to the cover art of the movie. The .ico file is then saved on the server and is shared with all users. What this has done for years on previous versions of Windows has made it so if a user opens the network location of the shortcuts they will see the custom icons from any machine on the domain. Works great for movies...but can be used to change the icon for a program shortcut too.

However, in Win8...it doesn't work. All a user can see in the shortcut folder is what is in the picture above. There are no permission differences...this is on a domain so all permissions should be coming from the domain controller, but even so I hacen't been able to find anything locally that should effect this in Win8. The shortcuts all work and will launch the movie file. They just won't get the icon. If I open the shortcut properties I see that the icon is still set to be the custom .ico file and If I go through the motions of setting it again it will still not bring it in.

It is like they blocked this functionality in Win8. Shortcuts on the local machine can have the icons changed under Win8 though.

You will want to just change them again, the cache of the files are gone because it sounds like you upgraded your OS. You probably went through each movie and changed this one by one, and will have to do this again. There are program that will do this for you though and grab info from IMDB, I would Google this.

Even if I do change them again while logged on the Win8 machine they will not change.

However, that is the beauty of this. You never have to change the shortcuts again. I can format a machine (with a non-Win8 version) and open the movie shortcuts folder and see the cover art...some one can bring their laptop over that has never been on my network and see the the cover art (provided I give them access to the folder.)

This is a no mess no fuss way to set custom icons for shortcuts so that you never loose them. I've been doing this since Windows XP(I think...it might be only since Vista...its been a while) without a problem.

Where are they stored ? They are obviously not being read from icon.db cache somehow. They are not local since you are getting them over the network. The icons in windows 8.1 are awful I have found missing ones as well. I know this sounds silly but try it. Boot into safe mode with networking and then tell me if they show up ? Then if they do they will be restored when you reboot. Not to mention that picture is showing shortcuts not the original files themselves. Those icons are all shortcuts where are the original files? You need to recreate the shortcuts somehow or use original files.
