I wanna put my m5a97 board out to pasture and get one where my 8350 will be more comfy in and overclockable, also due to asus's crappy service I refuse to touch their products anymore, another reason why I wanna ditch my board

In my experience, Gigabyte has some nice 990fx boards. I am using a GA990FXA-UD5. I've had no problems with it, aside from a high vdroop. That being said, it was the first revision of that board and the new one's aren't bad at all. The UD3 is also very nice if you're not needing 3-way CF/SLI. However the cooling solution on the VRMs and NB is a little weaker than it's big brother. A lot of people achieve some very nice clocks with this board. I hope this was helpful.
