DDR3 = GDDR5

It has nothing to do with next generation ram. GDDR stands for Graphic double data rate... It is high-speed ram, a must for GPU because they don't have cache like CPU do. All the GPU cores share the same memory, this is why you need very fast ram to not bottleneck your gpu.

DDR4 is not faster then DDR3 for now. Some DDR3 sticks score better than DDR4! DDR4 has multiple manufacturing advantages and allows using lower voltage due to that. I think it is because they can stack chips which reduces delay. They can also put more memory on a single stick and the memory modules are smaller allowing lower voltage. The main advantage with DDR4 isn't so much the speed but the possibility of having higher density and lower consumption. Since its primary use is on server, we will have to wait a while before we can get DDR4 hitting higher speed than DDR3 (and eventually being used in graphic memory - GDDR6).

Lol Ati are so far behind. Nvidia has been using GDDR5 for years, we must be approaching GDDR6 not and Ati aren't there?

384 GCN cores on DDR3 aka HD7730 DDR3

HD7730 DDR3 (2GB):

1269 in Firestrike
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4801/5/budget-video-cards-amd-radeon-hd-7730-vs-nvidia-geforce-gt-640-gk208-3dmark-fire-strike

H7730 DDR3 (2GB)
* is on par wtih GTX 560ti for GPGPU
* is as fast as GTX 460 for Photoshop CS6

http://ht4u.net/reviews/2013/sapphire_radeon_hd7730_1gb_2gb_gigabyte_geforce_gt640_1gb_gddr5_test/index39.php

does fine in Luxmark

and Computemark

Seriously?

AMD was first to GDDR5. (HD4870)

---

According to

it'll only be 128 bit for dual channel vs 128-bit on the existing HD7730 GDDR3. It's too bad we don't have triple (192-bit) or quad channel (256-bit).

If it's just 384 core it will be floating point GPGPU, not for gaming or anything that is going to use resources for rendering graphics realtime (HTPC / encoding maybe, playing games on 1080p+ , no)

@AlphaC

Thanks for posting those benchmarks. The 7750 DDR3 uses the equivalent of dual-channel DDR3-1600 so Kaveri should be even faster with decent RAM (DDR3-2400 or DDR3-2500 which are supported out of the box). The real good news is how close it should be able to get to GT 640 performance, which should make it an awesome laptop chip.

You're welcome.

I remembered another one:
512 shader HD7750 2GB

http://ht4u.net/reviews/2012/msi_radeon_hd_7750_2gb_ddr3_test/index32.php
*pretty bad for games but good enough for Photoshop / GPGPU and such where memory isn't being taxed

It does beg the question why AMD is choosing to launch the R7 250 and R7 240 2GB GDDR3 versions, those both have less than 384 shaders (R7 250 has 384 , R7 240 has 320). Both SKUs cannot drive 3 monitors , the R7 250 doesn't seem to come in low profile version for Intel HTPCs or cheapened AM3+ / X79 systems.
