The latest figures from market researcher Net Applications show that Microsoft's Windows 8 operating systems (Windows 8 and Windows 8.1) managed to surpass 9.25% market share by the end of October 2013. That 9.25% is split 7.53% Windows 8 and 1.72% Windows 8.1. The figures look reasonably good showing that Windows 8.1 has managed to stimulate some additional interest in Windows 8 as we've seen quite a sharp rise in Windows 8(.1) since July. Microsoft announced its consumer preview of Windows 8.1 on June 26th and since then growth in Windows 8(.1) has been quite sharp. Windows 8(.1) has also managed to capture some of the Windows XP defectors, though a lot of these have ended up going to Windows 7 as the below graph shows.

Considering Windows 8.1 is only two weeks old these results are neither spectacular nor awful, they are pretty average. Over the next month we will really be able to see whether Windows 8.1 captured the attention of consumers or not because 1.72% after only 2 weeks doesn't really tell us all that much. Of course you could look at this more pessimistically (or realistically?) and say that Windows 8.1 has been available for consumers to download and install since June 26th, so it has only managed 1.72% in 4 and a half months, when you frame it like that it doesn't look good.

Not sure what the hold up is... Windows 8/8.1 is actually really nice. If you just get ouf of the habit of "clicking" your way through the start menu and power user it by simply hitting the Windows key on your keyboard and typing what you want to run, it's seamless and easy. The performance in games is great, the out of the box support for multi monitor, and various other things as well.

Ah well, it'll catch on eventually. It takes everything that Windows 7 did well, and refined it a bit more.

Some people like that habit. remember the start menu has like 35 years of reach in it and every single desktop OS but, 8 has some sort of start menu.

i use windows 7 daily and i never navigate through the start menu programs to find anything. seriously, simply pressing the win key and then typing/searching is way faster. Works the same way in metro too..

In October, Windows 8.1 doubled its market share to 1.72 percent, up from 0.87 percent in September, which is a precise 97.7 percent in the month-long period. Yesterday, I guessed that the end-of-October figure would be around 1.5 percent. Keep in mind that this is not 1.72 percent of Windows machines, but all desktop-based computers. For comparison, Apple's OS X controls 7.73 percent of the global PC market.

Two can play at this game haters... You want to post a negative nancy story.. I'll post a positive one. What I find most interesting is that in 10 days (yes 10 days) Windows 8.1 Gained more marketshare among all PCs than Linux has EVER had LOL

Unity and Gnome 3 both have no traditional start menu, they have launcher panels that you type what you want and it gives it to you.

OSX has no start menu counterpart, it has Finder + the dock. The taskbar changes based on the application (Unity works like this as well).

Another massive pointless opinionated discussion about how MS "ruined" Windows coming up in 3...2...1...

Sorry to burst your bubble...
I really like 8.1, by far favorite os. I'll get flamed for this, I like win 8.1 way better than 7...wut?

Start8 brings back the start menu. 5mb "patch" and its free

The benefits of windows 8 are too good to pass up just because of a little start menu snafu

Was playing around with OblyTile last night. Honestly MS should've given us this kind of customization from the beginning...

I've never had mouse input lag on my system and I've run Win8 since launch...

Aw, waaaah! Consumer PC's come with Windows 8 and the haters can't do crap about it. Cry me a river.

In on-topic, non-hater news, things are looking up for Win8. As more and more people realize it actually is a good OS its numbers will continue to get better and better...

This I would agree with. Microsoft fixed a lot in 8.1, but not being able to customize tiles easily without a 3rd party program was a mistake. Especially for the tablets, where optimizing whats on the screen is important.

I can't see any reason to choose 7 over it if you're buying new today.
Very much this, but I think its OK to be late than never show up. Loving 8.1 and I don't see myself going back to 7. Like everything, it takes some time to get used to it, but honestly once learned some of the newer keyboard shortcuts, the whole process became smoother. Going to look at some of the extensions out so I can make the start menu look like the HUB I envision it to be.
