Could anyone (especially those who upgraded from a 7970) give me some advice on this situation:

I'd like to play BF4 @ 1440p@45+fps on High/Ultra (or 1080p@60fps on High at the least).
I game on a single 27" 60 Hz LCD, with a second monitor (2407WFP) for web browser/movies,etc.

In Australia:
The Gigabyte R290X costs $700 (AUD). [Launch Price]
Until Monday, I can buy an MSI 7970 Twin Frozr OC Boost Edition for $300 (AUD). (brand new retail)

Obviously the 290X is an awesome card, yet it's quite a lot of money (and more than double the 7970's special price).
I realise that the 7970 is considered "older" technology now (and even rebadged as 280x tongue.gif), however what are people's thoughts on bang-for-buck given it's temporary $300 price tag.
Should I go for the super deal on the 7970 or pay double and get the R290x?
Additionally, the nVidia 780Ti was just released. Do you think this will drop the price of the 290x? If so, should I wait for that to occur? (noting that the 7970 deal expires tomorrow/ 6 Nov 13)

PC Spec:
i5-750 @ 3.3Ghz. 8GB 1600RAM. Win 7-64bit. 2x 120GB SSD (OS + Games) + 1TB HDD (Media).
LCDs: Dell 2713HM + Dell 2407WFP.
No wanting to water cool. No SLI (on current M/B)

I currently have a GTX275 850MB. Dont laugh! tongue.gif

Thanks for any help.

supposedly its only 3% slower than the 290x

otherwise at mwave the EVGA GTX 780 is $ 640 right now

ill put a link soon and dont bother with the 770 since its so bloody expensive here

I actually heard something similar (regarding price) from another retailer. 290 non-x priced at $675. For the $25 extra, might as well get the 290x though.
That 780 is tempting, but I think the 290X beats the 780 in most of the benches I'm interested in. And Mantle should provide (at least some) more improvements for BF4 performance.

Do you think it's better to wait for the 780Ti to come out, which might push 290x prices down to a more reasonable level?
Personally, the 7970 at $300 is a BUY NOW. The only thing holding me back is that it's getting a little older and I'm already on a VERY old GPU. If the 290x was at a better price, I think I'd be jumping on that due to the new tech, Mantle and (obviously) higher performance.

i know that the 7970 ghz is $300 at msy but i prefer to upgrade to latest fast card

really even a single 7970 will do you good for bf4 but if you want a future proof upgrade grab that 290x

for mantle i am really going to wait and hold out how it turns up

so i am still using my 7950

780 ti is supposed to be $800 AUD so i think that is just plain silly to grab

Yea, fair enough. I guess I should probably wait out just a little bit. If the 7970 was available 6 months ago for that price, it would have made sense. But seeing as I've held out so long (about 4-5 years tongue.gif) I should probably jump to top-ish tier, rather than EOL.

So perhaps it's looking more like 290x vs 780.

Amazon have a BLACK FRIDAY sale (20%+ off )on nVidia cards atm.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=s9_hps_bw_clnk?node=172282,!493964,541966,193870011,284822,!493964&search-alias=computers&field-feature_keywords_five_browse-bin=6147187011&bbn=284822&field-pct-off-mp-owner=20-&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_r=0W610Q85WYM8JT2Z6XB9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1639452322&pf_rd_i=7586091011

It seems that none of the brands will ship to AUS except the ASUS. (eg: 780 Direct CU II = 598.79 AUD delivered, 7-14 days).
Although that amazon price is actually only $40-$60 cheaper than the EVGA standard, superclocked and Dual FTW respectively (from PCCASEGEAR)

I definitely won't be looking at the 780Ti. Was simply hoping it could drop the cost of 290x by a bit.

7970 is doing very well in BF4, So for $300 its a good choice, if BF4 is your main focus get a 7970 otherwise wait for r9-290, it should be at least 100 bucks cheaper than 290X, i'd assume in Australia as well.
