worth it to jump ship from intel/nvidia to amd? - Page 2

i know intel does better in MMO's right now, which is why i have an intel rig. it does fine, but with the gpu technology landscape changing with mantle and more multi-threaded game programming on its way, the advantage is seemingly going to shift in AMD's favor.

intel and nvidia have been the kings for a long time, and IMO, their prices are less than kind. i'd like a change of scenery.

mantle and multi cores most likely wont make their way to mmos for a while.

....why wouldn't they? multi core's and mantle could potentially push MMO's into the same graphical detail we never thought we could get out of a large persistent world an MMO currently provides.

i for one would think MMO developers would jump on this bandwagon ASAP once they see the results are favorable.

devs are too lazy to multi core program or they would already.

mantle so far is only on the frostbite engine. How many mmos use the frostbite engine? i think youre trying to make it sound better than it really is because you just want to go amd, which is fine, if you really want to, go for it, they arent awful like some people say. But trying to justify it by saying multi cores and mantle will be in mmos soon is setting yourself up for dissapointment.

Intel CPU, AMD GPU.

Even tho you can have AMD CPU with 8 cores, IPC performance is much worse than Intel's. Only if you can make use of 8 cores would I recommend AMD.

290x is better than 780, has more VRAM too.

290x is better than a 780, but i have yet to see an mmo use more than 2gb of vram on 2560x1440 lol, so vram doesnt matter there imo.

290x also costs more and 780 comes with 3 free games tongue.gif

Yep, but y having less VRAM when you can have more?! For later. Most ppl don't upgrade every year. Most actually upgrade every 2-3 years.

if hes playing 1920x1080, 3gb of vram will be more than enough well into 2014, its another one of those things amd/nvidia try to sell as "future proofing" look at the titan, most people wont ever hit 6gb of vram used ever. But nvidia " ohhhhhhhhhh myyyyyyyy goddddddddddddddd 6GB OF VRAMMMMMMMMM and people eat it up.

What you really should look at in that comparison is the memory bandwidth. If one card has more RAM, but less bandwidth, the extra RAM doesn't really mean anything. But more RAM + more bandwidth = more performance.

only at extreme resolutions really.

512bit bus doesnt do much at 1920x1440/ 2560x1440 it only really starts to **** at triple monitor or 4k resolutions. just another selling point from amd " look at the higher number we put on our product page, its so much higher than that other number!"
