Worthwhile getting X79 for R9-290x xfire?

Well,

Last month I got the car, this month I'm getting the computer but I'm having issues finding a decent benchmark. I'm wondering if I should go with the x79 with Ivybridge for the x16 x16 PCI-E 3.0 ports or if I will be fine with the x16 x8 ports on a standard haswell CPU.

Any ideas?

Cheers

PCI-E 3.0 x8 will not bottleneck and if there are improvements from running x16 x16 it will be minor. However, x79 gives you the option to run tri or quad fire in the future. I personally wish I would have gone x79, but I never thought my build would end up being what it is. XD

If you just want to xfire two cards then a z87 board is fine. You will not notice any difference between x16 x16 and x16 x8. X79 is the only option if you want to go with three or four cards.

That sounds like a plan,

To be honest, I did want to stick with a standard haswell and a z87 board over the X79 mainly down to cost. I'm never going to go with 3 cards, I'll be more than happy with 2 to be honest.

Thanks for the input peeps.

Yup. I've previously tried the three kard systems with x58, but ended up going double card config for long periods of time. So for my current system when I built it I just ran 16 8 sli without a problem, before I got the single 7970.

It's the more economic and worthwhile thing to do; But if you have a moster psu like I have you might feel it being under used.

Nah,

It's going to be a fresh build so I'll put in the XFX 850w black PSU... It should be getting loaded to around 90%.
