Hi.... I just got a 4930K and a Gigabyte X79-UP4 rv.1.1 board with F5 bios ! First, I have NO 3D Bios....just advanced ( which I would use anyway ), and I cannot get stable past 4.2 ghz either !!!
It has been 4 months since you posted.... have you made any changes or figured out why this piece of crap won't do 4.5ghz like it should ? I also am thinking it's the motherboard as I have read 80-90%
of people with the 4930 can hit 4.5 on other boards.... just not THIS one !!!! mad.gif
Write back if you have any new info, be greatly appreciated before I RMA the whole thing back .......CPU included !!!!

It's very common for that board to hit a wall at 4.2/4.3. Don't bother with an RMA, either return it or sell it, then get something that's proven to overclock better.

Umm.. Yea, that board is just not a good pair with a 4930k if you want to overclock. When I had that board I was stuck at 4.2. I did have some stability at 4.3 but I needed 1.41 volts and to me that's just too many volts for another 100mhz..

I only paid 130 for mine, for the money and all the pcie slots it was great. Rock solid at stock settings for those not looking to overclock.

Agreed. I'm stuck at 4.2 with mine also. Just never bothered to exchange it for an Asus. I've yet to see anyone get over 4.3 with the UP4.

Yeah i had some AVEXIR RAM here had problems with 2 X79 Motherboards, with random crashes now it might not happen with everyone, but for me it did.

And caused a lot of problems till i managed to trace it to the Ram i was using, voltage and other tweaks did not make any difference here!

What did was to buy a Quad Set of G.SKILL RAM that was listed in the QVL List in the Motherboard Handbook!

I now use this set above Overclocked to 2400 Mhz and ever since then its been solid as a rock here, and no more random crashes like before!

Respectfully,

AJ.

Which type of Avexir ram did you have? I have been looking at some of their stuff thinking about getting a quad kit of 4gb sticks for a Haswell setup, but I planned on giving it a try in my rampage b.e. first to see if it works before I commit to 8 sticks!

Thanks for the quick replies ..... board going back....CPU going back...maybe get a different bin# or something..... my new set up with 4930.... X79 board.... 1866 quad ram.... has made a whole 10% difference from my X58 tri channel I7-980(non X ) system..... and that used all RAM (24gb) 1600 ram ! Only benchmark performance increase with this is SSD speeds ( benchmarks.....not actual real world noticeable ) !!!!! Games run same....Sony Vegas runs a LITTLE faster.... Adobe suite runs a LITTLE quicker....just mainly Premiere CS6 .... but not really much of a difference ! MY X58 I7-980 with 24gb's of 1600mhz RAM on the old chipset..... is basically JUST as FAST as this set up except the Corsair H100i cooler made my temps drop 10c and is quieter ! Power savings is better too.... but that is not a PERFORMANCE increase per say ! Cinebench 11.5 went up 2 pts. with same clockspeed 10.88 to 12.58 ! Games all run the same...Crysis series...Battlefield series.... Batman series .... COD series .... all of my 40 games loaded ( all on SSD's ) run the same !!!!! Get a good CPU...even quad core.....matched with good GPU's ....good to go ! Was hoping my rendering would be a major improvement.... of what I have tested as and as long as I have this system stable ( 4.2ghz ).... I see an increase of maybe 15-20% improvement in Sony Vegas 12 and Adobe Premiere Pro with a lot of encoding...transitions.... layers.... ect....... and that is because I am using another SSD as scratch drive !!!!!! $1000 investment for 15% improvement and a LOT of failures in system .... and I blame the Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 r.1.1 for most of it ! ( + some features just do NOT work ) ! Do NOT try Gigabyte Over Clock tuner .....has never worked on any boards and seriously fails on this one !!!!!
That's my statement and review and sticking with it !!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS BOARD if YOU are SERIOUS about PERFORMANCE increase ! Just grab a Haswell 4770 and a good GPU and decent RAM & an SSD..... you will be SET.... will perform as well as this or better because of the better architecture & IPC of the chip !!!! And the cost difference is huge !!!!!! Or if you have a 3930K.... get another board.... namely ASUS....and you will be good to go !!!!!!!
Do NOT do I7-4930K with a Gigabyte board...unless MAYBE the Sniper series...again....MAYBE !!!!!!!!
Thanks again !!!!!!!

The ones i used where Avexir Core Series 16 GB 4 X 4 sticks here!!!

1, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-002-AR&groupid=701&catid=8

I think these are the ones i used, but i did the wrong thing by buy 2 sets with the same numbers and putting them together to make a Quad Set!!!

In most cases you can get this to work, but on this platform it seems to be different, and you need a matched Quad Set of Ram!!

I hope this helps you out!!

AJ.

Yeah thanks! I planned on a quad kit for the other pc and I am going to try it on the B.E. I can't seem to find any 8 stick kits from them though, so I would have to mix kits and I already know the B.E. can be a finicky beeotch!!

That's where i fell down mix and matching sets, had random BSOD's, even just watching YouTube video's nothing too strenuous at all!

Just chilling enjoying the music and bang its gone all shuts down and reboots back up again!

AJ.
