Stuttering when playing games - RESOLVED

Have an issue with a friends PC, basically anytime she plays a game, the game begins to "stutter" (ie, repeating sound, 10-15 sec delay to input any keyboard commands). This seems to be an issue only with games, possibly just Valve games. Games from within Steam such as Xcom Enemy Unknown, Amnesia Machine for Pigs run fine.

Windows Event Error shows

The Steam Client Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Steam Client Service service to connect.

I was thinking a driver issue, but I just did a fresh Win 7 install, so at this point I am pretty much ruling out any driver issues but am open to ideas.

System Specs:

i5 760
AMD 5770 (13.9)
Asus P7P55D ELX
4GB OCZ XTC
500GB Seagate

Thanks in advance for any pointers and help!

Sounds to me like something went bad with the steam install. Have you tried reinstalling steam and every game completely? Test it with other games as well that aren't steam related.

Also which games is he trying it with when it breaks and what settings?

Thanks for the quick reply.

As I said, this happens after a brandnew Windows install, it happened before and continues to be a problem even after a fresh W7 install. Specifically the games where this happens are Portal, Left4Dead, TF2, Alienswarm, all Valve games.

Ok, it seems it is indeed a Valve specific issue, where Valve games do not correctly auto-detect the games video settings. I took all graphics settings down a notch and Portal played fine this time... at least for the 5mins we played it. Before the skipping and stuttering would begin after only a few seconds into the game.

Something similar happened to me a bit ago but it would do this out of games also (but rarer). Replacing the harddrive fixed that right up. If you have an old hdd around slap windows on it, put a few games on, and see if that fixes it.

The problem seems to be resolved by setting the Advanced Video Options down a notch. Probably a rare occurrence of Valve games auto-detecting/ setting incorrect graphics options on certain video cards. I'll repost if she has any more problems.
