Help please. First time overclocking and it's... interesting

Ok, so first things first. I here are my specs.

Amd Phenom II 6x 1055t 2.8ghz cpu
Asus M4A785TD-EVO mother board
4gb DDR3 SDRAM 1600 for the ram

at the moment I am using the stock cooler and attempting to get about 3.5 ghz out of this overclock and hopefully 4 ghz with a decent after market heat sink some time in the future. For now however, I'm simply trying to boost my cpu enough that guild wars 2 will stop bottlenecking it's performance. I've seen seen many threads here and elsewhere saying it's possible and does the trick just fine. So I picked up a bunch of guides for my cpu and similar set ups and tried it out. My first attempt, I upped the fsb to 250 and boosted the voltage to 1.4 as recommended by my guides as being fairly safe for my set up. No sooner had I rebooted I had a cpu temperature warning. Bios read 108 celcius and I decided I better ask for some help rather than destroying my computer. So I have reverted my changes and am here asking for help. Where should I start? How much can I get before having to get an aftermarket cooler? Hope you guys can help.

you cant go anywhere without an aftermarket cooler

You can probably get decent temps with an OC at 3.1GHz? 14x225. Try it out and see what your temps are. Otherwise, get an aftermarket cooler.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I decided to get the Hyper 212 plus and play it safe as my temps are still running a bit high. I will likely be back after that for more advice if the temps don't respond like I want them to. Thanks again

On my x3 I couldn't go higher them 3.0. 15x200. I got a zalman cnps10x cooler and got to 3.2 at 1.3v at only 32 degree. Aftermarket coolers makes Huge difference

So, I got my cooler and easily got my cpu to a cool 3.5 ghz. That heatsink is amazing. I have quite a bit of wiggle room however, and heard I can bump my fsb to 288 and get 4032 out of an air cool overclock. This being my first overclock however, I have run into a complication that I don"t quite understand, at least not fully. Upon upping the fsb to 288 my reboot results in an overclock failed message. I assume its due to a setting with memory or something similar but I really don't even know where to look since asus's bios refuses to use familiar terms from the forums. At any rate, here are some screens from cpu-z, and even my bios. How can I better optimize this overclock? If you are feeling particularly generous, you can also inform of the how and why memory affects an overclock. I'm curious and the sheer amount of jargon has me baffled. Any help would be appreciated.

Where are your voltages? On my 8120 I've noticed that it takes higher voltage to FSB overclock than multiplier overclocking. FSB raising also yields more points in Cinebench than raising the multiplier.
Short answer: Try upping your voltages.
