2560 x 1600 gaming. Help a brother deciding best option :)

Hello to you all,

so i'm building a new rig. " Unfortunately ", i sold my 1920x1200 monitors and i just kept the 30" ( work oriented ). This brought some problems when deciding what kind of graphic power i will need to run games.

The rig will be used as a gaming rig and "workstation" for my work ( GUI and front-end dev ).

The big problem is that i'm having a hard time deciding if i go single gpu or dual.

The options i've been equalizing are:

- 1 x GTX 780
- 2 x GTX 770 4Gb
- 1 x 290x
- 2 x 280x

I must admin i'm looking at the 2 x 770 4gb more and more but ... i don't know.
I know the 780Ti is around the corner, but i've been delaying and delaying this buy and if my suspicions are correct, the 780Ti will be a paper launch and availability of the card worldwide will be around December. Meanwhile i need a computer.

The other thing is that my initial plans were to build a mini-itx system but if i go SLI/CF i will change to micro-atx.

So, my questions to you, that are more up to date with latest and greatest in the market ( i've been under the radar for some time now ), area, for a 2560x1600 resolution, the best solution is...

( Game type i play: BF4, Splintercell ... )

smile.gif

( Btw, the build will be around the 4770k, 16Gb ram and a ROG Gene VI ( mATX ) or Impact ( mITX ). )

Thank you all for the time and attention,
Pedro.

custom R9 290 or R9 290X would be the best option if BF4 is high on your priority. even without mantle R9 290X is easily the fastest card for BF4 at 1600p. check out tomorrow's R9 290 launch reviews and then decide.

I think with all the new updates to Crossfire drivers, and with all the crazy prices for the 7xxx of amd cards. It is almost a no brainer. I would either look at 2 7950's or 2 7970's depending on prices. You can find 7950's for under $200.00 so for $400.00 or even under you can have a system that would foot stomp on any of those cards in single card configuration and still be cheaper. =) Just my .02 I'm running dual 7870XT's at 7970 speeds on a 1440p and 1080p side by side and i can max pretty much all games minus some AA due to my 2gb vram....

Thank you for your replies.

I'm really thinking about getting 2 x 280x's ... i've been waiting for 290 / 290x custom designs to appear, or at least, to be announced, but with no luck. And meanwhile, i really need to finish my build.

So, maybe, i'll get 2 Asus 280x DCII or Matrix ... or that, or get 2 290's "stock" but i'm really not fan of under-average cooling solutions ... frown.gif

I'll try to decide during today...

Have you considered buying a R9 290 and adding a aftermarket cooler later down the road. The Gelid Icy Vision Rev. 2 is quite inexpensive but will provide much better cooling compared even to future custom designs from board partners. The only catch with this option is avoiding being caught if you need warranty as some point since afaik replacing the cooler voids the warranty.

Well, after thinking and thinking and thinking ... i decided to go with the 290 family ... lets just see if the 290 or 290x. Usually when i do upgrades i want to get the "best i can" while keeping some finantial sanity ... and i saw the 290 at great prices.

I also read that Artic Cooling is going to launch a new solutions for the R9 290/290x ... so if by the time i get the cards, there's nothing better than the stock cards, i'll go for it and get some after market coolers.
