Upgrade advice on R9 290x

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm thinking about upgrading to the R9 290x but am unsure how badly my current rig would bottle neck.

I have:

- Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155 8MB Cache
- Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
- Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard
- Coolermaster Centurion 5 II SPECIAL EDITION Case with Red Interior - With Coolermaster 650W GX PSU
- I'm also going to purchase either a VG248QE or XL2411T

The components are a couple of years old and I'm wondering if I'd need to replace most of them to realise anything like the full potential of the GPU. I'm assuming I'd need a new PSU, but that's relatively inexpensive, it's more the CPU and motherboard I'm concerned about.

Obviously I'm not a bleeding edge tech guy, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt.
Matt

OC that cpu to 4.5-4.8GHz and you should be all set. Though I'm not sure about the PSU's quality and it may or may not be able to handle it.

The concept of a CPU bottleneck on a video card is vastly over rated. In testing I did comparing a stock A10 6800K vs a stock i7 4770 with both using the same 7970 video card, I found there was no bottleneck. I used the Graphics score in 3D mark for the comparison, this test is purely about the graphics and if the CPU was holding the card back it would show. Averaging 5 runs with comparisons of the GPU score I found the testing showed a difference of less than 1%. This shows the CPU was not holding back the card.

Look at a lot of testing out there, with the exception of a few specific games the APU is able to stay close to the i7 in a lot of testing. With this data in hand and the fact that your CPU at stock is likely a bit faster than the APU I would say even at stock speeds you will be fine.

Great, thanks for the replies guys. I've been looking around and found this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-vtx3d-radeon-r9-290x-x-edition-28nm-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-1030mhz-2816-streams-dport-dvi-hdmi-plus-b , do you have any experience with VTX3D cards? Seems like a bargain, as I need to purchase BF4 anyway.

As it is a reference card it doesn't really matter which brand you get. Same stuff with different stickers.
