SLi 760 GTX 4GB or SLi 680 4GB? 5760x1080 (Surround) Gaming.

Hey Guys,

Not long ago posted up a thread on here regarding my choice of new GPU, ended up going with the GTX 760 2GB in SLi.

Gotta say, I love these cards - value for money it's amazing and ANYTHING I can chuck at it on 1920x1080 it has played on Ultra settings, without blinking an eye.

I did a lot of research on 2GB vs 4GB especially with Surround in mind (I have 3 24" screens) and thought I made the right decision.. fired up Guild Wars 2 - yep 5760x1080 and Ultra settings - no lag, yep fired up BF3 - mint.. very happy with my purchase.

Then came along BF4.

Oh BF4. Long story short, I underestimated the VRAM I would need for this beast of a game. GPU-Z shows me running at a constant 2GB of used VRAM even on 1920x1080 (which plays ultra settings perfect 60+ fps) but as you can imagine, once i'm in Surround resolution - it no longer is perfect, in fact it's choppy as all heck.

Anyway, I'll cut to the chase - I'm going to buy 2 new 4GB cards (I can't find a Single card for the $600-$700 price range that is as good considering I want 4GB minimum of VRAM) and right now i'm looking at two new EVGA GTX680 4GB or two new EVGA GTX760 4GB.. I know the 680s kill the 760s single card performance wise, but I know a few bits and bobs came with the 7 series that was supposed to be very important for SLI.. and obviously the 7 series is newer.

Opinions?

If anyone has any recommendations outside of SLI 680 4GB/SLI 760 4GB i'm all ears, I was considering a R290X/7990 but figured a single card configuration wouldn't have the power to use that extra VRAM, whereas a SLI/Xfire config would.. please take note that this exact budget is already pushing it - so no Titan recommendations please.

HI Chez,

I remember your post as I tried to help advise...

If I remember correctly i showed you a set of results that proved on a GTX770 that 4gb and 2gb wont make much of a difference (http://alienbabeltech.com/main/gtx-770-4gb-vs-2gb-tested/3/), now I know thatis not a 760 but it is reasonable to assume that it carries down to a GTX760 as well. Given that assumption (and it is an assumption) I dont know if SLI GTX760 4Gb would be any better than SLI GTX760 2Gb given a single card cant use 4Gb.

I am sure people here can help you make a good choice.

Best of Luck

For that resolutions i'd suggest you go for 7970 CFX / 280x. They have a 3GB buffer and if you mainly game BF4, expect mantle to give you further boost. Also, if i correctly remember, going SLI/CFX would still give you the same VRAM of 3/4GB but the load to use that VRAM would be split between the GPU's, and also that the 680/770/760, due to their narrower memory bandwidth are not able to utilize all the vram, unless you do crazy OC's on the memory speed.
Here are few of my recommendations
2x These
or
2x These

You could wait for a few more days and see how things unfold with Nvidia announcing 780ti, which is sure to bring down the prices further

Thanks, yeah I recall the link.

I've done a bunch of research and have really came down to the conclusion that running a 4GB single card isn't smart, because you won't have the power to utilize the ~4GB unless you run something like a Titan. So the logical choice is to run SLi/Xfire 4GB Cards if you want the power to back up that huge VRAM - or simply deal with having 2GB VRAM but don't expect amazing results on Surround. All my tests are pointing towards VRAM being my limiting factor now, and thus i'm re-exploring the options of either:

GTX 680 4GB SLI (Seems the best choice right now)
GTX 760 4GB SLI (Newer chipset, but not sure)
7990 Single Card (Concerned about ability to utilise all it's VRAM here on Surround)
R290X Single Card (Concerned about ability to utilise all it's VRAM here on Surround)

Ideally, I would LOVE to hear from someone running BF4 (Ultra settings only please, I'm far too picky to play games at Medium) on Surround and what their GPU setup is, and how they find the frame rate. Mantle comes to mind as being a big influence - I would really love to go back to a single card set up but I can't afford a Titan.. so I'm sort of stuck between those 4 choices right now. For anyone concerned that i've swapped GPU's a lot - I can sell the used cards really easily so it's not an issue for me to of changed 2 times now within 6months tongue.gif.

Yep, you're right - SLI/CF will not stack VRAM, but if you don't go SLI/CF - it's more than likely your card won't have the power to use the 4GB VRAM anyway, so you just wasted the cash on the upgrade until you eventually go a dual setup in the future.

I was thinking of the 7970 / 280X in XF but honestly I want to stay away from XF until AMD sort it out... I only get a bad feeling about XF when I start googling. In comparison, Surround seems miles ahead support/stability wise. I also was hesitant as it will only see me with 3GB of VRAM.. which is a 1GB upgrade - I would rather have way too much than just enough VRAM when it comes to Surround if that makes sense.

The store I purchase from has already severely discounted the EVGA nVidia cards I referenced, in anticipation for the 780Ti. Thus my choice to buy now, before they sell all the 680 stock and don't re-order.

Cheapest Titan I find on eBay is still $1000, not to mention I would -prefer- to stay away from Used products when it comes to that much $ redface.gif

By the way guys, as per http://www.overclock.net/t/780396/official-nvidia-surround/7160 it's evident that BF4 on this resolution is using over 3GB of VRAM, so I think it's safe to say I don't want anything under 4GB.

(all in AUD)
EVGA GTX 680 SLI - $400 each ($800 total)
EVGA GTX 760 FTW SLI - $400 each ($800 total)
280X - $380 each (but again, only 3GB - I really want to stay with 4GB+ options only here)
290X - $700 each (perfect, but again concern is mainly regarding whether a single card set up even has the power to use that much VRAM..)
7990 - $700 each (perfect, but again concern is mainly regarding whether a single card set up even has the power to use that much VRAM..)

$700-$800 is really hitting budget cap for me.

Well then as 4Gb is what you want at least and both GTX760 SLi and GTX680 SLi is about the same price locally for you...

Its a no brainer for me - the GTX680 Sli is what I would recomment as 680 Sli sits somewhere between GTX690 and GTX770 SLi

Having said that the GTX690 on AUS EBAY is $750 so that could be an option!?
