Best type of fan for cooling behind cpu socket (back of motherboard)

Thread Starter
Just curious to know what would be the best type of fan to cool off the CPU socket on the back of the motherboard.

Why do you need to cool there?

Depends on if your case has the support for it. I use a slim 120x120x12 fan. frozencpu.com has them:

I've considered something similar myself and been toying with actually doing it once I mod some more room in my case. Nothing a rotary tool cannot fix...

The best fan really is a quiet one for that instance. It's a small gap and you only need so much flow under the board but if you're applying it directly under the socket - try to get a fan with as small a center as possible otherwise try to install it a bit off center to allow cross flow. Using something with too much CFM and RPM will cause for a much louder than expected fan so look for ones with low RPM but high Static Pressure.

Has anyone any experience of using thermal pads to transfer heat from the back of the motherboard to the case?

with the amount of cable management space that are built into the back of the mobo tray these days. there are no "pads" in existence that would carry the heat that far biggrin.gif there is little to no need for such cooling in the 1st place since you'll just be better off saving the $ to buy a better HSF in the 1st place
