Want to increase BF4 frames? Unpark your cores! - Page 9

Parked cores are basically a feature of the OS to help cool the CPU. It's a safety feature from what I remember when toying with this in Planetside. I think it's unfair to call it placebo effect because it has been proven to work in other games. BF4 may work on 4-8 cores natively, but this mod to the OS could still make the game use those cores more effectively. Personally I don't know, my cores haven't been parked in a year or so.

But, if I do the guide as per JMcosta and set both values in RegEdit to 0... it automatically changes the power options menu to 0%

So, is 100% or 0% correct for unparking?

I am wondering exactly the same.

When I ran the tool, it said parked 2 of them, I unparked them, and actually then after in windows was saying that they were getting parked, so maybe this tool only really works on w7? could be that that was a w7 bug?

This tool does not work, at least on w8 and neither 8.1.

before I never seen a parked core using 100% , but the tool was still saying "parked 2 cores". I used it, rebooted check and saying unparked. But the truth is not that. Now I see on windows I can actually see cores parked lol.....

My guess is that this tool is for w7 users, where there is a bug, for the others with w8.x its just a placebo effect lol

If the cores are parked, you'll see it on Resource Monitor.

To my knowledge Win7 never parks cores on a single CPU system, maybe when HT enabled on INTEL. Win 8 does park AMD Phenom x6 1090t cores. I had to tweak registry to show more options in Power Options to disable core parking. There's a certain application(mostly poor coding) and it was locking up all the time, fixed after core parking disabled on win8.

Software regulating CPU power is always bad. It was bad when AMD CnQ was introduced, and it's still bad.

Yes I see them parked there after using the tool, before it no.

Now I selected in the tool park them again, restarted and voila , they don't show as parked in resource monitor.
Actually this makes sense, if you check the reg key that they suggest to put it to 0 to unpark the cpu it is not logic at all.

The description of the key is this one: @%SystemRoot%\system32\powrprof.dll,-766,Specify the minimum number of unparked cores/packages allowed (in percentage).

so if you set it to 0, 0 are unparked, if you set 100% (my default number) all them are unparked. That's why my theory that is a w7 bug seems logic. Otherway is placebo effect.

Take a look at a usage log, it never drops to zero for any of this parking to take place even if there was an issue with it not functioning properly..

And it shows parked cores because when you run the program windows is idle for pete's sake.

Am I lost? How is this crowd not monitoring usages when something doesn't seem to be running right?

Agreed, the amount of times I've seen this tweak suggested when its completely irrelevant appalls me. Every thread about any kind of game performance issue, the first reply is always "UNPARK UR COREZ BRAH".

There may be a few edge cases where the tweak can actually help (with specific hardware configurations in win7), but in most cases its irrelevant nonsense.

Its also very easy to see for sure if your cores are "parked" or not, without using silly 3rd party utilities. Open the "resource monitor", and go to the CPU tab. If a core is parked, it will say so above the corresponding cpu usage graph for that core. Afaik, at least one of these common 3rd party utilities will misleadingly tell you cores are "parked" when they aren't actually parked.

Gonna have to try this later, cant believe i havent heard about this. But i dont think ill get much gains with a i7 2600k w/ Windows 8

I just wish there was a built in benchmark to do a decent comparison

EDIT: Cousin with Win7 and an AMD 8 core said it helped boost his fps from 60fps w/ choppiness to 70-80fps smooth - and i didnt even tell him what it would do. He seemed to notice a change immediately in his setup. Anecdotal i know, but promising.

One of the tools of program WOLF lets you just Enable \ Disable Core Parking.

For what its worth, I don't believe it should be a huge relief on BF4. Core parking is usually only an issue when logical processors are flat lined by the OS in multi-threaded applications, examples are WinRAR 4.00+ Night and day difference.

That being said, I always have it disabled.

Link to my program is in my signature.

Just did this. Seems to have kept my frame rates from going all over the place on BF4. 65-75 fps constant on ultra.
