Bored of waiting for none ref 290X? Check this simple & cheap fix!

Folks if your bored of waiting for the none reference AMD 290X's to be released due to the high temps and noise, why not check out the Gelid Icy Vision rev2 air cooler? The cooler can be had for ~£30 and as you can see below drops temperatures a ridiculous amount. The rev2 has been updated recently and now states it supports the R9 290X, and sure enough it does!

The installation is really simple, all you do is remove original stock cooler, put small thermal stickers on all the VRMs & memory chips, remove the sticker cover, apply heatsinks, put the actual cooler unit on the gpu core, screw it down and your done. Its knocked off ~40C load temps on my 290x and the fans are inaudible now.

Just thought I would post this for anyone who is sick of waiting, until a few days ago I didnt realise current aftermarket air coolers were compatible with the 290x. Also the above temps are with my gpu running folding@home (100% load), but I am running a caseless setup.

Hope this helps!

thanks guys, are either of you contemplating buying a 290x?

Nah, no new GPU for me for a while, i just find it amusing and baffling that AMD shafted themselves so hard on their flagship card when they could have had a much more solid win
