Transferring External HDD Enclosures

Thread Starter
I have a 1 TB WD MyBook HP Simple Save external drive that has been acting up lately.I never get read/write errors but it will randomly drop to 0 mbps on transfers and it takes forever just for folders/sub folders to load.

I assumed the SATA to USB 2.0 card was going out so I took the drive out and threw it in my case. No dice. When I opened Disk Management I get a pop up that says "You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manger can access it" That means destroy the partition table so no thanks.

After some reading I decided to just replace the USB 2.0 converter with a new USB 3.0 one, but when looking in disk manager I get the same message: "You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manger can access it"

If I connect the old MyBook USB 2.0 converter the disk shows up as normal with all of my data on it. How can I get to my data to show up on the new USB 3 converter?

P.S. I've already used TestDisk to search for partition information and 1.5 days later it found nothing.

The only thing I can think of is that the drives could be encrypted with hardware like the Western Digital external HDD's. If that's the case the only way to transfer your data is copy it to a safe place and then reformat the drive and then move the drive to a new enclosure and re-copy the data back onto the HP HDD.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm a little worried that encryption might be the case (It's a WD drive inside the HP enclosure). If so things are going to get tricky.

In the meantime, I backed up the partition table and did a quick format on the drive. I'm using Recuva and the new USB 3.0 connector now to see if it will find the data that's on there, and if not I should be able to restore the partition table with the old HP USB board. Time will tell, Recuva takes forever on a large disk like this.

So the new SATA to USB 3.0 adapter did not find the data after the ~2 day search using Recuva. Using the original USB adapter and Recuva, it's already found 1,600+ files in about an hour and I'm only at 2%! (restoring the partition table did not work sadly) Hopefully I get spread this data around all of my spare drives so I can format this one with the USB 3.0 and move it all back. I going to pick up some new drives for a RAID setup come Cyber Monday thumb.gif

So for anyone finding this thread in the future, it seems that the HP SimpleSave external drives use some kind of encryption similar to the WD external drives, so you'll need to use an identical USB adapter if yours takes a crap.
