Modding, painting optical drive?

What are your thoughts on changing the color of the optical drive. As you have probably noticed the generic color of most optical DVD drives are black plastic face plate, in a grey metal case for the internal part, which is jarring with my scheme on my new build as it is very much visable in my Corsair C70. I know its purely aesthetic (shallow?) but my current project is a bit of a tart and components were chosen on appearance.

What are some ideas about turning this thing black? I am reluctant to paint the case as moving parts and electronic stuff don't go with spraypaint gunk very well. Is there a optical DVD case mod on the market? If there isn't there should be, might be some mnoney there ha.

But anyway fire away any ideas on how to change my DVD drive from generic gray to black and even better if you have done it ! hmm

unclip the faceplate & spray it? there retention clips on the sides/top etc, the bezel on the tray should come off by clicking it upwards too.

id use a matt or satin spray. try plastikote @ B&Q if your in the uk? just don't use there gloss paint its tacky crap!

Just remove metal casing of the optical drive to paint it. Many have clips or are just screwed down. I've opened up plenty to remove stuck discs or just from boredom.

Just remember to give it a light sanding before you paint it, so it can adhere better.

I have a C70 with 2 dvd drives and found a guy on here that did a mod by taking the metal blank optical bay covers and remove the plastic covers from the optical drives and modify the metal covers so that they can be attached to the drives with double sided tape.
I can't remember where the mod thread is, but you remove the side tabs on the metal covers by carefully cutting them off then remove the front plastic from the dvd drives and attach the metal covers, he also showed even though the button on your drive is covered when he pushed on the metal cover it was enough to activate the drives switch to open the tray. or you can just right click the dvd icon under my computer and select eject.
I will try to find the mod thread.

edit: here is the mod video.

Cheers guys!

I have dismantled a few drives before for fun mostly so it should be no problem and i also have done my fair share of spraying on car and bike panels i have owned, so all of that should be straight forward, giving it a key and priming it etc I was just concerned it might effect performance, but i cant see how.

But now i think about it if i go to B&Q and pick up all this paint its going to be equal or maybe cheaper to just find an optical drive that does have a black case and buy it.....

If i can find one ill post it here for reference, if not ill spray it as recommended

and thanks jlhawn for the vid i actually did a stealth drive way back so i may do it again.

forgot to mention, I also painted the metal case on my 2 DVD drives so they weren't sticking out like a sore thumb
inside my case, they fit so tight sliding in it took paint off so I had to buy a small bottle of automotive touch up paint
that has a small brush in the bottle and touch up the drives. mad.gif
