Onboard vs Xonar DX/DG

post #1 of 6

YO!

Thinking about picking up a sound card again. Been looking at the most recommended thread on here but it seems to be super old, not sure if anything has changed since then? Thinking of picking up a xonar DG, maybe a DX, not sure. I do gaming/music 50/50. Like my bass and clarity, Listen to 80s metal, New wave retro, chiptune, EDM and house. Play mainly FPS. Will I even see a difference in making the switch?

Current setup;

Onboard: VIA VT1708S

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/audio/codecs/vt1708s/

Speakers: Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 + Logitech 2w cheapos left & right rear in quadraphonic

http://www.klipsch.com/promedia-2-1-computer-speakers

Headphones: Skullcandy 2XL Brickyards (got em for free)

With those gears I doubt you will hear any outstanding differences. Although the onboard doesn't sound very decent...
Go with Xonar DG if you want to get a soundcard. Or the new Sound Blaster Audigy FX which was released recently (quality is a big question mark though).

I don't know much about VIA but Realtek AC898 sound quality is pretty much equal to my current Xonar DGX. I'm using Superlux 668B. With Realtek I had to keep volume at 100% and it still wasn't enough for me, with DGX you get enough. Mic record quality was also pretty bad with Realtek, DGX improved it alot. I recommend DGX if you get it under 40 euros. Seek for DGX because it's PCI-E, DG is old PCI.

I would first get better speakers/headphones before soundcard.

Really don't think these Klipschs are high enough quality to gain a difference with a card? They sound decent with my onboard and my headphones are deff trash, but don't game with headphones. I like to game with speakers.
