[RPS] Valve Fixing Steam Offline to Run Indefinitely - Page 3

steam FTW!!! i just wished they had a feature to reset achievements for your games. My brother played skyrim for months before he got his own account. Now i want to play but he already got all the main achievements already mad.gif I wonder if i can get around that by buying the legendary edition?

RPS updated the article to show that the post made by a Valve employee was done in June.

I always found Steam's Offline Mode to be a confusing mess. Anytime it's ask how long you can keep Steam in Offline Mode until you need to reauthenticate, the answer is always "a week or so," "a few weeks," or "about a month." Why isn't there an exact time frame? Has Valve ever come out and said "Offline Mode works for X amount of time"?

Amen to that.

The first offline mode is the interrupted service offline mode. This means you were logged into Steam, WITH ACCOUNT CREDENTIALS SAVED on the local machine, (done by checking "remember on this computer" when signing in) then lost internet service suddenly. That offline mode works automatically, you don't need to go into the options and click on "Offline mode" in that circumstance. In fact if you do then you will cause yourself problems. This type of offline mode works for 90-days, three months before you have to reconnect.

The second kind of offline mode is the permanent type. This is when you know you will be without regular internet, i.e. traveling, military service, etc. You again have to make sure that you SAVE YOUR ACCOUNT CREDENTIALS on the local machine. Then, while you still have internet service and are logged into Steam, go into the options and click on "Offline mode". Now you are in permanent offline mode and that will work until you get out of offline mode.

I have used both of these before with no problem. Most of the problems people have with the current implementation of offline mode is that they:
1. do not realize they need to have the credentials saved on the machine they want to use offline mode on
and,
2. think they have to click on "Steam">"Go Offline" after they have lost internet, which is the last thing they should do.

OK, I just read that article before posting and seems this is kind of non-news in the first place. Well, the above stands, I hope it helps anyone who has trouble with offline mode. Valve really needs to improve messaging on how to use offline mode.

Yeah I have a laptop that have been in offline mode for over two years now. Though the only games on it are Plants vrs Zombies, Ticket to Ride, Space Empires 4 and...two other near flash type games that only my wife plays.

Gee wonder why. Cant have Steambox and SteamOS getting crapped on like MS did for their DRM when they initially announced the Xbox one. They could have done this years ago, but it's only necessary from a PR standpoint now that they are trying to go up against the other consoles.
