Switching between headset and speakers

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am using onboard sound with Realtek drivers for a my Trittion 5.1 headset and my logitech 2.1 speakers. Everytime I want to switch between them, I have to pull out my computer, and switch the green audio output cable between the 2. I found the following and it seems like it will do exactly what I want.

http://www.amazon.com/Speaker-Headset-Switching-Manhattan-172851/dp/B000K8PH8C/ref=pd_sim_cps_1

However, will this degrade the audio coming out of the channel?

And do you guys recommend any better options?

Thanks ahead of time!

If I;m correct you can buy 5-pin open/close loop stereo jack speakers and interface with the front panel input if you have those for the headphones (or replace the input with this jack). When the headphone isn't connected, there are clips inside the jack that close the loop and pass sound straight on through another set of wires (to speakers in this case). When headphones are put in the jack the loop opens and will sent output to the headphones and not the speakers. It is essentially the simplest way to work this in my opinion without needing a switch.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking of..

Does your case not have a front audio port? That's how I have mine set up using Realtek onboard audio too. I've got my speakers plugged up into the back of the PC and then my headset/mic plugged in through the front audio ports. I can customize how I want the audio prioritized after that.

For example, I could have sound playing out of both audio outs, or I, as I have it now, whenever I plug in my headset, it automatically defaults to the front audio.

I have my 5.1 plugged in normally and my headphones going into the line in port. Whenever I want to switch between the two I go into my audio panel and tick the headphones or speakers switch. This option was default on my sniper 5 board. I assume there are freeware and/or open source versions that are similar available.
