hardware.fr finds that GTX 600 series review samples are consistently 2% faster or so than consumer versions. It gets posted and no one cares.
AMD gets accused of doing the same and they are under fire!!!
for being evil!
Anandtech tests chips in refrigerated rooms so they get better turbos. No one cares.
GPU reviewing took a massive hit when Nvidia released GPU boost. I ranted and raved about how it chips don't end up the same and some are high and low leakage, so they'll rarely boost the same. Meaning Nvidia/Intel/AMD can just send out cherry picked low leakage parts and watch them turbo like crazy. Then you buy a dud with a poor ASIC and you're 5% or 10% slower than all the reviews.
It's never going to be the same again, and it makes it much easier to cheat if you're a reviewer and you want specific results. Ergo "oh it's a hot day and Nvidia is giving me free review samples and money! I better test the AMDs and wait for a cold day or crank the AC to run the Nvidias!"
GPU reviewing is dead, it's nearly just as bad as gaming reviews.
