Save desktop icon location between driver update

Thread Starter
So, I have about 160 icons on my desktop - and they're organized in a very specific way (and I'm not willing to give it up). Now, for some reason, when updating my drivers (and then re-enabling SLI), Windows thinks its a great idea to completely ruin how they are ordered. This of course makes me have to reorganize all the icons again, which takes far longer than I care to admit.

So, is there any way to save the location of the icons, so I don't need to manually do this after every driver update?

Good for you—someone who actually uses the desktop!

There are several ways to save and restore your desktop icon layout:
  • Download and use DesktopOK.
  • Install "LAYOUT.DLL" to add "Save desktop layout" and "Restore desktop layout" to your desktop's context menu.  This worked for me in XP, and since this page talks about using it in Vista, it may also work in Windows 7.
  • Open Registry Editor (press [Win]+[R], type "regedit" and press [Enter]), and navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop".  Then click "File\Export" and save the registry key somewhere you'll remember it.  Please note that if you move some icons around and want to update your registry file, that you should log off and back on so Explorer will save the latest changes to the registry first.
When your desktop icons get messed up, click on the registry file you exported, but don't answer the "Do you want to merge this file" message.  Next, exit Explorer (click on an empty spot on the desktop, press [Alt]+[F4], and then press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Shift]+[Esc]).  The desktop will disappear.  At this point, click [Yes] to merge your registry file into the registry.  Then press [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Esc] to start Task Manager, click "File\New Task (Run...)", type "explorer" and press [Enter].  If you are using the same screen resolution (and number of monitors) that you were originally using when you created the registry file, your desktop icon positions should be restored.
