Not if it's caused only by the coil or transformer and not a bad capacitor causing a PSU transistor to turn on or off more gradually, which can make it overheat and burn out. But even that probably isn't dangerous, except to the motherboard.

Hello i found that thread by finding search, my psu stared whine i have weird coil whine. Its only whine when its not on load but if it under load like prime95 or intel burn test then there is not coil whine. Bad capicators? And its not whine when computer boot up and it starts when windows starts welcome screen. Computer works fine and no shutoffs and psu voltages are ok i got these results with my multimeter
yellow 12.01v-12.03v
red 5.01-5.03v
its nice chieftec 500w unit and weight alot so feels quality item.

If whine changes with load it is coil whine, and nothing to worry about. You may be able to make it stop by rearranging, removing, or adding cards.

No its opposite it only whine when computer is not at load and doing internet stuff and so but if you use prime95 or intelburntest and is in load then there is no whine and thats very strange because its opposite than many others who have whine at load but not at idle

You misunderstand me. Change in load, not increase in load. If it whines at low load level, but not at another load level (be it higher or lower) then it is coil whine.

Coils always whine. Even a silent computer produces a fair amount of noise. Just not in the range of human hearing. What is happening is that when your coils vibrate just so, it creates a resonance which allows you to hear something you normally couldn't.

All you need to do is change the parameters a bit so the machine does not enter that state. Increasing resting load by adding cards, decreasing it by removing cards, or even changing the slot a particular card is in can all potentially change the state enough that the whine passes back out of your range of hearing.

Yep. The problem is a bit like a weird electronic echo that gets out of control. Lucky you were able to make it go away with just that though. Sometimes it's a real pain.

Keep in mind the whine is still there, it just changed frequency enough that the only one who it will irritate is your dog.
