How about a GTX 780 for $50 LESS (and comes with 3 games) than an R9 290X ... oh, and you can actually take delivery of a GTX 780, which is very hard to do on a 290X.

There is your "price to performance" card.

While the price is now better, 290 seems to be the king of price/performance now.

Dunno, I haven't seen someone actually crunch the numbers yet on them and factor in noise, heat, games, price, and FPS.

I'd really be interested to see such a comparison between the $499 GTX 780 to the $549 R9 290X.

Now, if you are talking about the non-X version ... yeah, from what I read, AMD has that price/performance ration won hands down.

But the GTX 780Ti was all about beating the R9 290X, and it does. The GTX 780Ti wasn't designed to be a "price to performance ratio" card for the R9 290. Maybe if they come out with a GTX 770Ti, it will.

How about $515 for a 780 Lightning from Newegg? The ref 290x can't compete with that value.

Really? Lol, seems we have people saying the same non-sense every card generation.

BF4 already uses more than 2 gigs, making it unplayable at max settings on 2 gig cards even in 1080p. 3 gigs will only be viable for maybe a year more, before it starts to bottleneck. R290(X) is nice in the sense that it will be more futureproof. What is the point of all this horsepower, if you cannot use it, because of a VRAM bottleneck.

Oh and did I mention the cool lag, fps drops, freezing and microstutter you get, when you card maxes it's VRAM? Yeah, just ask my previous 570s in SLI....

780 is now competing against the 290, which costs $100 less.

You just have to ignore the fact that the stock cooler sucks, and it's really loud in order to achieve that.

AMD's last minute driver turned up the fan from 40% to 47%, so it can maintain the 947 MHZ clocks in benchmarks.

It puts extra pressure on NVIDIA, and the 780 isn't looking so hot at $499 now, and it may need to drop to $450, 780TI shouldn't be more than $599 either.

btw - the 780 Lightning is already down to $515 AR, I see further price cuts in the 780's future.

Considering that the recommended settings for BF4 is 3GB, I don't see the problem. You can play it on 2GB, but you won't be able to with all the "bells and whistles" turned on.

As far as your comment about 3GB only being viable for a year or more, well, let's face it, odds are that in 6 months nVidia will release their 800 series and in a year, AMD will release a new line as well. Given that people just tend to sell their old cards and buy "the latest and greatest" (again, assuming that they just don't run their old cards at 1 notch from top), it's pretty much a moot point.

I bought into the who HYPE of "future proofing" long ago when AMD pushed the Athlon saying it is the perfect chip for 64-bit OS's. Well, I ended up upgrading CPU's about 6 times after that Athlon before I went to a 64-bit desktop.

Bottom line, 3GB is plenty.

I bought my 780 at 499 $ and didn't scrape the codes for the games which I need, I have then returned it for the 780 Ti though.
So 699 $ - 150 $(3 games) = 549 $ which is the same as a 290X I paid for.
Those games aren't worth 50$ each. You can buy all of them for a much reduced price on sites like Ebay.

Totally false. I played BF4 for about 3 days with my gtx690 with the game completely maxed in 1440p without even a hiccup. And your only talking about weak old 1080p. Unplayable you say......
