Usually external soundcards are not very good (compared to internal ones), except for DACs. I would recommend you looking into Creative Z (z, zx and zxr) series for gaming and music and or an Auzentech card if you are more into music and movies.
BUT, all this, considering you have good quality headphones/speakers. Sound quality will always be as good as your worst component. Being it cables, sound card, speakers or DAC.
If you have mediocre speakers/headphones, the ALC889 will do just fine.
