i5 4670k first time overclocker... :(

Hi,

Just built myself a new rig, with the intention of trying a bit of overclocking (been building PC's for years, but never tried to OC before). Specs below:

ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero
i5 4670K
Corsair H100i
16gb (2x8gb) Corsair Vengeance Pro 2133mhz
ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum
Seasonic x750 PSU
Thermaltake Urban S71 Case

The Mobo comes with the AISuite III software, which on the face of it sounds ideal for someone like me - figured I'd let it do an "auto" overclock and see what values it changes and learn that way. Tried the 4-way optimisation doodaa, and set the CPU level-up to 4.2, which I gather I should be able to achieve pretty easily with my setup...right?

BSOD on booting to windows, usually just before logon, occasionally just after, with a stop code of 0x00000124. I think it references HAL.dll as cause.

Is the AI Suite worth bothering with? I quite like the fan management bit, but I'm guessing there are better dedicated applications to do this with. It does seem to have clocked the CPU to 3.8 all by itself out of the box...

Has anyone else got a similar setup that has achieved 4.2 upwards? If so, how did you go about it? Am I being unrealistic?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated. I am pretty comfortable with technical terms (I work in IT), but being an OC noob might need things dumbing down a tad tongue.gif

Thanks

Personally i would suggest overclocking through bios. I'm not a big fan of the overclocking software, to me it dumbs down overclocking and usually you can achieve a better OC through bios

You should be able to get some good info on how to set it up in this thead

Thanks Lucky, I'll certainly check it out. Looks like I'll just go straight to BIOS for OC then.

Can you recommend any independent monitoring/configuration software for fans? Especially if it can incorporate graphics card fan control into one platform... (using GPU tweak atm, but it would be good to be able to increase case fan RPM when gfx card heats up as well as the gpu fans)

- Not done anything manually yet...I guess the AI suite software should have done this when increasing the clock speed, but if you suspect that to be the issue then maybe not. I'll go the manual route.

Thanks for the replies!

Not that i know of. Most use MSI afterburner or GPU tweak for their graphics cards and a separate program such as the motherboard software to control the case fans.

Is Speedfan still updated? It won't control the GPU fan (that I know of), but it should be able to control the motherboard fan headers. Can you install just the fan control part of AI Suite?
