Can't push my ram to 2133 (rated) or beyond! [new system]

Hi guys, I updraged from windows 7 ultimate to windows 8 pro yesterday. Everything's going smoothly and I replaced my CPU and SSD at the same time.

I'm now running a 4930k @ 4.5ghz (for now) at 1.4V while trying to get my memory to it's rated speeds.

I'm having trouble doing this.

I'm running a corsair dominator platinum 4x4gb 1.5v rated 2133 kit.

With my old 3930k I could run this up to ~2200 with base clock OCs and 1.51v to account for some droop but since I've upgraded to ivy bridge e I'm having trouble getting it to run at 2133.

I used the stock timings and stock voltage at first with my CPU at stock and ran it to 2133 and got an error with the message saying "system thread exception not handled" or something similar (I'll try again and edit it) and windows won't let me boot and crashes and restarts.

I tried using the XMP profile and was met to the same problem. I lowered my CPU OC for now to get guaranteed stability while testing it.

The ram runs completely fine at 1333mhz with 9-9-9-24-2T timings.

It also runs fine (prime 95 tested) with my 2133mhz timings (9-10-9-27-1T) and 1.51v on 1866mhz which is irritating (this is with overclocks).

What's irritating is that on my 3930k I could push it to CAS 8 and run it at just over 2200mhz.

I'm wondering if the problem is my motherboard, I have a sabertooth X79 I could use to test the memory on and I still have my old 3930k but I would really like to avoid dismantling my PSU and CPU/cooler to test but I will if it comes to it.

I think it's a problem related to windows 8, or maybe my windows 7 was always UNSTABLE?

Would this problem be from the ram, I usually wouldn't mind replacing the sticks completely but ram prices are skyrocketing and I'd only consider wasting $150-200+ on a faster kit I guess but that's useless with DDR4/haswell E coming out in <14 months.

I'm open to trying anything, thanks for the help in advance.

My components are in sig rig.

I have nothing installed except steam and one game so far, chipset/bluetooth/GPU/soundcard drivers + AIsuite2.

My GPU is still untouched and on stock clocks and voltages, heck even SLI is still disabled.

I've been trying to fix this problem for about 18 hours on and off (and I've reinstalled windows to no avail because my crashes messed with something during a driver update restart due to the ram), thanks for the help in advance.

I did a full format before reinstall btw smile.gif.

I haven't updated to windows 8.1 yet either.

Thank you thumb.gif

TL;DR?

Dominator plat 2133mhz ram 1.5v rated doesn't run anymore since I upgraded CPU's to a 4930k from a 3930k. Motherboard and GPU are the same, ssd changed.

The ram used to overclock past stock with a tiny bit of extra voltage (cas 8 and 1T at 2200mhz +), since windows 8 update won't run 2133 1.5-1.515v with 9-11-9-27-1T.

Runs 1866 at those same timings at 1.5v completely stable (with CPU stock and mild OC).

Runs 1333mhz fine with stock timings.

XMP 2133 doesn't work either.

Is the problem the ram degrading significantly over two days?

Motherboard problem?

I could reseat the ram (lol doesn't sound right but pull them out and re-insert)?

I still have 3930k and another board to test if that would help determine if it's the new cpu's memory controller (isn't ivy supposed to be an IMC UPGRADE?) or the motherboard.

I've also changed powersupplies btw and given my old one away (the old one was worse though, 12v line would be 12.14 at idle) according to MOBO readout and H100 pump would rattle.

Switched from windows 7 U to windows 8 Pro during the CPU/PSU "upgrade".

EDIT: Tried 2133 again, added some PLL voltage and VCCSA voltage and bumped up ram a teency bit to 1.52v.

I made it to the lock screen, I didn't touch anything at all and was going for the mouse, about a second after lockscreen shows and I touch the mouse I get the blue smiley of death? BSOD. This time it gives me the error message "registry_error".

I switch settings back and 1866mhz and I'm perfectly fine and rolling again.

Stick your 3930K back in and see if you can run the RAM at it's rated speed. You could just have a weak 4930K. They're only rated up to DDR3 1866 so anything higher may not work.

It worked at stock perfectly fine on my 3930k I just tested it now. So this means I got a terrible 4930k then...at least it does 1.4v 4.6ghz so it's average. Would you recommend upping the voltage to say 1.55 to maybe get 2133 to run?

Try upping the the VCCIO or VCCSA / memory controller voltage a bit.

Just double checking, have you updated the BIOS to the latest version for full support for Ivy-E chips?

I hate to say it, but that memory may already be pushed quite a bit even at its official 2133 rating and could be made from chips rated only 1600 MHz and possibly 1333 MHz. I don't trust the kind of testing that companies like Corsair and G.Skill do to bin their RAM because it seems seems they test with only one type of motherboard and CPU.

I'd blame the motherboard. X79 board compatibility with Ivy-E is spottier than it ought to be; my board will, for no real reason, just not accept 2400MHz. 2133MHz runs like a champ, but 2400MHz and it starts having kittens.

I have a I5 3570k , z77 mobo and some 2400 gksill ram, it used to run the xmp profile but a few months ago when i was tweaking my overclock it wont boot anything above 2200. But I havent change the mem controller voltage which i may try when i get home. But from what i gatherd some chips(cpu) just wont handle those high of speeds. But like you mine used to which is weird.

11/15/2013 tried upping the mem controller and no go, bump it up about 6 points and put it back , dont really know save voltage for that.

You may have to put a few more volts into the ram kit if upping the volts made a difference. There may be some VDroop issues with the power delivery system to the ram which is causing it to run below 1.5V thus causing instability.
