Is it safe to remove my GPU shroud?

Thread Starter
I would love some opinions on running a GPU without a shroud, I used to do it with my reference 7950, and the temps were a lot better (Particularly the VRMs) but I re-installed the shroud because I was paranoid of the PCB bending without the extra rigidity.

Now I want to do it again, and I'm wondering what you guys think about it. Come to think of it, the card's out-of-the-box sag is probably about as much the shrouds fault as it is the heatsink's fault, in terms of weight.

Thanks tongue.gif

I am by no means "clued up" on this topic so it will interest me as well ... ... but as far as I understand the shroud on reference cards is an important part of the card because it helps direct the airflow from the blower type fan across the card's heatsinks/vrms and out the back ..

And on some non ref cads the shroud holds the fans so that would result in worse cooling (removing the fans)

If I am wrong I do apologize ... tongue.gif

Yeah this is my understanding too, and with the back fan reference cards I'm pretty sure the fan, heatsink, and shroud is all one piece.

My card is the middle fan style, the fan screws on to the outside edges of the heatsink, and the glorious shroud sits over it biggrin.gif

This setup blows air out both ends of the card, but the problem is the air being blown over the VRMs is hot air.

I just removed the shroud again, and my case fans definitely helped the card's temps, as I have a 140mm fan on the side of the case, right next to the card, and 2x 120mms fans at the front. If I had bad ventilation I'm sure my temps would be horrid without the shroud to guide the airflow tongue.gif

So now I'm just curious if the shroud adds any needy rigidity, despite it's crazy weight on the card.

Id take it off if the temps actually are better. I haven't seen any ref cards benefit from a non channeled air flow though. If your worried about sag, zip ties are your friend.

Alot of people remove thier shrouds to do the Mod and mount the closed system pump to the gpu. I havent noticed the pcb bending on the couple of mods I've done. If that helps. You should check it out very good cooling and quiet.

i haven't seen people with the shroud on that water cool. and some of those block can get heavy....just something to ponder.
if temps are better without, i say run it without.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed to know. Surely the tubes leading from the block to the rad put tension on the card when you mount the rad below the card, so I should be totally good!

+REP to all of you thumb.gif
