ok today my psu killed the atx12v socket mofets area on my GA-MA790X-UD4P:(

I just got my psu back from rma which was a power and cooling 750watt cause it has burnt 20pin connector and a discolored atx 12v connector, And the 3.3 rail was reading 2.8 which the pc was unstable..

So i got the psu back and installed it and everything was rock solid again and the 3.3 rail reads 3.360 now. So it was running all day perfect and when i was doseing off watching twitch tv my pc shut off and i smell a burning smell.. and the atx 12v plug was really hot, I tried my 2nd psu and it still didint work just the lights would blink on the fans and that was it, but psu will power when the 12v not plugged in.

So i took the board out and there's a brownish color on the back of the board beside the cpu... and the moffets are slanted and the caps are also slanted... So yea psu killed board and im hopeing power and cooling will replace the board.

Cause at the moment i cant afford anything because i lost my job recently...

But i just wanted to know what other boards uses the same raid controller so i can used my raid drives with the data on it? Like is there a better board that uses ddr2 than the GA-MA790X-UD4P?

I have my thread in the psu section if you guys want to see.

I will also post a pic of the damage on the board too...

Sorry for your loss O.o' sounds like it just couldn't handle the load at all really... frown.gif

Looking at results.. according to the gigabyte site the AMD750 Southbridge handles the Raid Functionality...

"South Bridge:

1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID5, RAID 10 and JBOD "

I'm sure that isn't much help really but it's what I can find. Usually I would see a strict mention if certain storage features are based off a secondary controller. Just check the specs is all on the manufacturer site to see if a board has such features.

I would go for a board that has as robust of a VRM area as possible. this way you can have Peace of mind in knowing it can take the stress. When the board powers without the CPU4pin connecter is a sutre sign of failed VRM's as I had a board that silently wen belly up as well on me not long ago. One thing to keep in mind is even though you have water cooling is to provide as much airflow to the VRM's as possible since they won't get any real airflow due to the lack of a top-down type aircooler.

EDIT IN: What I might suggest if you search for another board is to try to get one with both DDR2 and DDR3 slot types. While you won't be able to use both ddr2 and 3 at once, it gives you further upgrade options in the future for a budget oriented milestone. Several of the AM3/AM3+ boards actually have this and would suggest going for a black socket board (AM3+) since the VRM's are a little bit more robust for the sake of the AM3+ processor lineup.

Only board I can find for that matter is the following from a quick search:
960GC-GS FX
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/960GC-GS%20FX/?cat=Specifications

As for the raid controller, you 'should' be fine really but I'm sure others more knowledgeable on raid could chip in.

thanks for the suggesting:) Board looks good, One problem i see with it is if i used my dd2 i would ony get 4gb max because that board has 2 slots for each ram type. My ram is 4 sticks for total of 8gb:( 4gb just isn't enough now adays lol

Yea i just don't get why the vrm did this because the board has huge heat sinks over them and i was told i wont have any problems with them burning up when i bought it,

My case also had good air flow and the heat sink didn't get burning hot at all, It just seems like the psu did it because 20hours after i got the psu back from rma 20hours later it burns up

. While at the time the psu was getting fixed i was using my hyper r580 watt and didn't have no problems at all, And when it burned up i wasn't stress testing it at all or gaming just was watching a twitch tv video.

I contacted power and cooling and they got back to me and said they going to send a free shipping label because this is the 2nd time i need to send it in.

Than they asked is my motherboard under warranty and can i send it to get rma, I told them no its about 4 years old as old as the psu, So maybe they would help me with replacing the board too.

And for the raid i pretty much need to find out 100% for that because last i herd you need the same raid controller for the raid to be detected and see able with the files intact. so most likely i will need to get the same board or another one with sb750 controller.

If i knew if i can just pop them in and get my files with any motherboard i would get something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157394 and just get ddr3 memory that's if they will re burst the damage board money. If not i will have to stick with my xps 420 till i can afford anything.

Heres the pics of the board with out the heat sinks. Is the caps and the r80s suppose to be slanted like that? i circle them in yellow, And another thing weird thing i see if you look at the vrms you see silver dots which they come off very easy i circled them too. is that normal? I wonder if some solder came off and shorted them out or something?

Also the shiny stuff you see over the stuff is the heat sink residue, But yea if i put my nose up to them i can smell the electronic burnt smell.. this cant be fixed right?

I was wondering will a DFI LP JR 790GX-M3H5 AM3 work with my raids with the data intact ? It uses the sb750. So would it be just popping my raid drives in and that's it?

I have always been a fan of dfi boards which i have 2 myself socket 754 and the 939 socket and both runs brand new with no problems.
