FX-8120 Throttle

Thread Starter
Before posting this I've been researching all day and testing different things with no luck. Quick back ground of the computer. My old rig that I gave to my girlfriend and just upgraded it with an Asus 770 OC 2gb video card on the 6th.
Specs:
8120 usually at stock but I've been messing with clocks and voltages do to my issue.
Corsair H60
ASRock 970 extreme4 latest bios
8gb of ripjaws
Seagate 2TB 7200rpm
Antec 620 psu
asus 770 video card
Max CPU temp on 2 month old Arctic 5 is 55c in Prime95 @ 4.0GHz stock voltage
Upgraded the video card for my girls birthday due to lag in BF3 but noticed it was still lagging even on lowest settings. It will play fine for a minute then lag for a minute and just go on like this the whole round. Does this in just about any game such as CS:GO. Sounds like a VRM issue to me but the VRM is cool to the touch. I've tried clocking it to 3.1 and setting the voltage where it's just stable which I found was right around 1.2 but I didn't try tuning it in cause it was still throttling. Chokes are extremely hot to the touch but I'm not sure if it would cause this and all my research says they get really hot and it's normal. I've moved the rad around to be an intake to blow air across the mosfets and I've even sat a fan on the video card blowing right at them. Right now the rad is an exhaust on the top and the rear is an intake to bring fresh air on the mosfets. Nothing seems to change the throttle at all. As soon as the cpu gets around 50c it throttles. It was running a 6870 doing the same thing but I thought nothing of it and just assumed the card was under powered for BF3 which it is. She said nothing about other games having these lag spikes. I've messed with RAM speeds due to just running out of ideas of what it could be and it of course made no difference. Just upgraded to windows 8.1 from 8 and not a change in performance. I have latest drivers and bios on everything and I'm just stumped right now. Sorry if I was vague and not very grammatically correct but I'm extremely irritated over this computer. Any ideas and advice would be great.

We'll pulling the battery made progress. It takes an additional minute to throttle. I don't know why I thought these chips had turbo boost to 3.8 I guess my mind has just been stuck on my 3570k or something.

Well I feel dumb but as a last effort that should have been first thing on the list was trying a different temperature monitor. CPU is hitting a terrifying 78c and throttling. Both SpeedFan and Everest show this. I guess that's what I get for trusting one temp monitor for every build but now I'm just over all questioning Core Temp. After going through this headache I may end up putting my trust back into Everest. I hate myself for this lol now it's time to see if I forgot the compound or if the h60 is dead.

Check seating of your cooler on the CPU. Also, make sure the surface is perfectly flat without imperfections. My brand new 8350 had a metal booger that I had to shave off with a utility blade.

I came to find out that the H60 had mostly dried out and was doing damage to my 8120 for an unknown amount of time (while overclocked and stock) with out any issues until recently. I've gone through three coolers including the stock one supplied with the chip and have yet to get it stable at stock clocks. Seems to be permanent damage to the chip unfortunately such as burnt cores or something along those lines. Not too sure what exactly makes it unstable like this. I got a stable underclock of 2.8 today by raising the multiplier and lowering the frequency while running as low volts as possible. Can't remember off hand exactly what it's set at just kind of fell in a happy-ish clock. I'm seeing max of 70-71c in Battlefield 3 which is very hot but at least it stopped throttling without losing too much performance. Going to see if I can lower the temps a bit more while clocked at 2.8 by moving fans around and what not. Will post more specific steps I took later today for anyone who may run into a similar problem and for anyone who is just curious. Time to look into buying Piledriver
