If you're a fan of Open World and Full Loot MMO PvP - check out Darkfall

Hello OCN,

I thought I would do a PSA about Darkfall Unholy Wars ("DFUW"), a MMORPG I've been playing since early August. It is actually a complete overhaul of the original Darkfall Online that was released a few years ago. Here is a quick bullet point overview of the game (I'm sure I'm missing a ton of things):

  • There are 4 Roles (aka classes) - Warrior, Elementalist, Skirmisher and Primalist. Each role also has its own Schools (aka sub-classes) and players can pick a mix of a main and secondary School for each role. E.g. Elementalist - Water main / Air secondary. More importantly, you can also freely switch anytime between any of the 4 Roles at anytime (there is a short 15-minute cooldown for switching)
  • Progression is achieved via a prowess system - you earn prowess points by completing various feats (aka quests) from exploring, pve, pvp, crafting, etc. Using prowess, you can level up various stats, buy school abilities, level up school abilities, buy advanced crafting schools, etc. The level grind is pretty mediocre and tolerable. You can complete a lot of feats AFK and it doesn't take all that much prowess to become "viable"
  • Player housing and clan holdings - Players are able to claim and live out of houses in various villages throughout the DFUW world. Clans can take holdings (Hamlets and large cities) that in turn can be sieged by other clans.
  • Combat - There is no tab targeting in this game. Archery/melee/class abilities all need to be aimed and landed. Movement thus becomes extremely important both in timing and landing attacks, as well as blocking them. Think of the game as a MMO/FPS hybrid. Top-tier combat is very fast paced. Mindless ability rotation spamming is also countered by the game's stat management system (HP, Mana, Stamina - think Ultima Online here). Stat management is maintained through the stat transfer system (you can transfer mana to say stamina for a net gain, health to mana, stamina to health, heal yourself, steal hp from others, chug a potion, etc etc). There is also a full water combat system including ships and underwater fighting.
  • Death/full loot - when you are killed in combat you enter a downstate. Unlike GW2 or other games, you cannot do anything in the downstate except wait it out for ~2 minutes, get revived by another player or get ganked. When you are ganked, all the gear you had on you remains on your corpse and you are transported back to your bindstone. There are no "bound items" except for starter newbie weapons.
  • Gear - Player gear is always crafted (i.e. there are no rare named drops from mobs) and is ranked from 0 to 80 (r10, r20, etc)
  • There is absolutely no instancing of any kind in this game, which IMO is fantastic since instancing destroys the community and the "MMO" feel of games.

The game is not without its problems. Population is good but definitely could be better. There is a $15 sub fee. The economy is a bit of a mess. There's not much PvE content because the game is very PvP focused in nature and PvE is more a of a means to an end (once you grind feats from mobs you'll likely never fight em again). However, despite all that, I'll say it's definitely the most fun I've had in MMO PvP since Ultima Online / Asheron's Call / Shadowbane days. If you miss those games and the risk/reward nature of PvP, I highly recommend checking out DFUW.

Below are some videos of gameplay in case none of the above made sense. Feel free to ask any questions!
