Core i7 920 - Worth Upgrading?

Thread Starter
Greetings All,

I currently have a Core i7 920 D0 (details in my sig.) It's been hanging around for a while now, but I haven't really seen a compelling reason to upgrade to a new motherboard just to get a newer i7. I know a lot of folks had the 920 when it came out, so I'm wondering what kind of performance boost I might see if I go to a Haswell or something.

Then again, I'm wondering if upgrading my GTX 580 would be a better idea.

Thanks in advance!

I'd upgrade the 580 first.

The 920 still does very well.

Those will be rated at stock speeds; it's clear a 920 or a 950 still holds its own at OCed speeds against the latest gen. I personally have a 950 I'm going to run till it drops. smile.gif

1366 socket is a Legend. I just upgraded from an i7 920 to an i7 970 (Gulftown) but if you want a cheap 6 core 32nm for your 1366 socket the Xeon L5639 chip is just that at 85$ on eBay. The only draw back is the low multi.

I think I must've been the only person to have a raft of issues with my 1366 boards...

I just upgraded my 580 to a 780. My 930 is bottlenecking the 780 currently at 3.5GHz. I should be ok at 4GHz. Just a heads up.

Yeah, and you might be able to hit 4.2Ghz I was able to bring my chip to 4.2 and it really started to stretch it's legs thumb.gif

My brother gets about 10fps higher than me in certain areas of certain games. His cpu is a 3570K @ 5.1ghz. I have a i7 920 D0 @ 4.5ghz.

For example of what we compared. I booted up a heavily modded Skyrim on both pc's and stood over the town of Whiterun. I got 44fps while my brother got 55fps.

Another comparison was done in Crysis 3 on the "welcome to the junlge" map with lots of wavy grass. My fps was 44 and his was 55. Almost the exact same results as skyrim.

I will compare with him again once I get a 780ti to see if my 670 SLI was causing some of the lower frame rates. A single card should do better than SLI in those situations.

In the end, the i7 920 @ 4.5ghz is still a beast. 4 years old and still nipping at the heels of the newer i7's when it comes to gaming performance.

Depends on what you want to do with the system. I still run an i7 920 and I will be running it until at least Haswell-E comes out. For gaming your 920 at that speed is just fine. I run the same cpu at the same speed with SLIed 680's, only 2 games give me issues in the frame rate department. BF4 with Max AA and Borderlands 2 just tanks in some areas for some unknown reason. All other games are not an issue. Mind you I play @ 1080p since no 27in LCD would fit under the shelf on my desk. If you want to run 3 or more cards @ 2.5k or more you may want to upgrade your 920.

Also I agree on upgrading your GPU. a GTX 780 is around the same price you paid for your 580 or maybe less since your paid for the ROG matrix 580 according to your rig sig
