Hey guys I've been a bit worried recently about my PC, my fps has dropped a lot in games and the computer itself seems slow is there any programs I can use to check my PC status and If everything is running as smoothly as possible. I also think my PC compared to others is bad could someone who knows a lot about computers tell me if mine is good?

AMD FX 6300 6core processor 3.52ghz
8GB RAM
AMD XFX 7870 2GB
Corsair CX-500w
1TB Hard drive
Windows 8

Malwarebytes and a good virus scan are the first order of business. Large FPS drop means something isnt right, and large drops out of the blue seem to usually be viruses.

If that comes back clean, use Task Manager to look for odd sounding .exes. a string of gibberish letters and numbers? likely a virus. Reboot into safe mode and try the virus and malwarebyte scan again, then search that filename and delete it.

If none of the above is true, has it gotten warmer in the room? if not, check to see how dusty your PC is, thermal throttling could be the problem

Should I just use windows defender to test for malware/viruses? I normally run that everyday and it's clear. My gpu temperature is fine but I used to be able to get 200fps solid on league of legends and now in team fights it drops to 20 maybe 30 and it just freezes/lags. I've updated to the new AMD graphic drivers still drops

Or it could just be the latest game patch which is when it's been happening from or AMD cards in general having issues with league

Whether or not your PC is "bad" is sort of an opinionated measure. No, you are not running the latest and greatest hardware but that doesn't mean your PC isn't what you need for your purposes. I do have a few questions though:

  • Has your framerate been dropping in comparison with what it used to be in the same games, with the same settings? (Obviously more graphically intense games will cause your framerate to drop, but even games that are comparable can have varying results on the same system)
  • What motherboard do you have?
  • Have you made any major changes to your PC recently? (i.e. new hardware, software, especially system services)

There are numerous things you can do as routine PC maintenance. On the software side, this includes things like using Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner, as well as consistently using an antivirus. On the hardware side, this can be as simple as removing dust buildup and checking wires to ensure everything is still in place.

If there's a single thing I'd do to speed up your PC though, it's invest in an SSD. Even a small one to house your OS and most frequently used games will make more of an improvement than any of these other things.

Edit:

I'm not an AMD expert but they have definitely been having driver issues recently. You could try this suggestion made on TH to completely remove Catalyst from your PC so you can start fresh.

going from over 200 FPS to 20 or 30 isnt likely a driver issue. You ran a MalwareBytes scan? but yes, on Windows 8 windows defender is a full security suite.

Windows Defender is good for preventing and removing a high number of viruses and malware. Malwarebytes removes many of the same ones, plus some that Defender doesn't know how to look for. Defender looks for heuristic patterns (actions, file movements, property changes) that look viral whereas Malwarebytes looks for specific code patterns. They use two completely different scanning methods to achieve some of the same results. That's why we generally run Malwarebytes to pick up the things that the normal AV doesn't get.

If you were stuck in a non-hardware accelerated graphics mode due to a non-functioning driver, dropping from 200 to 20FPS would actually make a lot of sense to me. I wouldn't discount the possibility that there is a problem with the video driver installation. Look at the in-game settings and see what video modes the games are defaulting to. If the games are reverting to software or opengl rendering modes when DX10 or 11 would normally be an options it is possible that there is a driver problem.

It's also possible that the software side is causing conflict with the GPU or CPUs power management and not scaling up the clock speeds under load as it should. I know that my GTX460 "idles" at a speed just below about 10% of "full power" and if it gets locked at that speed performance is dismal. I think it's worth bumming around in the windows 8 powere management settings to make sure nothing favoring low power modes for the CPU or GPU, then look through the catalyst driver control panel for anything related to power management as well.

If it turns out to be a virus or gunk-ware of some kind, I would advise that you use chrome or firefox and load addblock+, then manually set your DNS settings to use 208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220 (opendns). If you download torrents make sure to run them through some heavy scanning before doing anything with them.

It's also worth looking at BIOS settings. Make sure there isn't some sort of hybrid xfire enabled by accident. Make sure the slot the card is loaded in hasn't reverted to 1X 1.0 speeds or something weird like that.
