I always game with headphones with very good isolation (DT770 Pro). Even still, a pair of of those AMD blowers in the form of 7970CF was enough to distract me while gaming and also kept me from pushing those cards to their limits: there was more performance to be had, but the cards just got so noisy that my headphones couldn't keep it out of my ears. It was a problem already with 7970's and now those same fans have even more heat to dispel. I was so happy when AMD went on the record last summer saying they were going to put more effort on their reference coolers. All the more reason to feel disappointed with the way things turned out.
Different people, different needs, different opinios.
But I really wont be sad if there arent any blower designs from aibs, that would completely defeat the point of non reference cards using more effective cooling. Only blower I know of that wasnt terrible was some his cooler, that actually hadnt closed shroud, took 2 and 1/4 slots, but at least could compete with some of the non reference designs (not even close to their own iceqx2 though).
Simply said, experience tells me, that colers with axial fans are always more effective than blower, even in cf/sli - if there is place on mobo/in case ofc - because using loud radial fan just to directly exhaust hot air out of case is inefficient when 120/140mm fans can do the same job MUCH QUIETER.
I had never issues with any cooler distracting me when wearing headphones, but one thing that proves all this fuzz about 290 cooler is blown out of proportion is, that it actually isnt really louder than 7970 blower. And you know, you havent really heard random dudes complaining about 7970 noise being unbearable or random articles focusing on that...
