The stock cooler sucks, that's the bottom line.

If they wanted the card to run at 95C, then it wouldn't throttle the hotter it got.

We know... The cooler sucks which is why I'm waiting for the non ref cooler. It shouldn't throttle then at a quiet and acceptable noise level.

The oems usually cut back on thermal compound, so if there was a guideline in order to disassemble the cooler safely - which I fear doesn't exist outside engineering manuals - I think every card would benefit a better application of AS5 tier thermal grease.
The card's software control is good, though there is more autonomy to incorporate for instance there should be at least some expected power efficiency from memory controller throttling, too. The memory controller should really be sweating on that 512 bit card. Smaller adjustments on both gpu and imc fronts could provide better linearity at higher temperatures since memory bandwidth doesn't matter as highly as the gpu processing speed (afaik) when frame rates & resolution are relatively low.

Yes its noisy, but I have a case round my computer! So showing a card in a opened setup will equal more noise.

The card still warrants a better air cooler as I see water cooling a minority of pc users. The $150 excuse to to buy a water block fails for most!

Saying all that I would still buy the 290x, mmm! No! The 290 instead, its a steal - that is when the coolers are better

And don't forget Nvidia raised the temp bar as well - just not to 95c. Seems both sides are exploiting this area thumb.gif

Q. Regarding the 290/290x, when can we expect to see vendor based cooling solutions?

A. I'm not certain when you'll see third-party solutions, I'm afraid

Headphones it is then whilst playing games biggrin.gif
