What is artifacting?

I've heard to people refer to certain errors that can occur as artifacting. What exactly is it? And what exactly causes it? Thanks for any info.

And btw, i DID search.

When the vid card gets too hot you get these bits of colour that flash over your screen where there is supposed to be a texture.

Yep.

Corrupted textures, random changes in image quality, distorted screen, unstable perfroamance, they are all hints at artifacting.

I am guessing this is an example.. it happened to me..

Only when I played CS, if I maybe shot the gun it would let me see through the game window onto the desktop.. it was weird... plus some of the walls in certain areas had clear squares... was this artifacting or just problems with CS?

Would this be the same, then, as when i play FEAR and i get random black screens with vertical lines of spotted color? After this my monitor fails to recieve a signal from the video card and i have to restart my rig.

Anyways, if this isn't artifacting, or even if it is, how do i fix this problem? I highly doubt its due to overheating, because I can play for 15 minutes and get this problem but my last session was a full hour and a half and i had no instance like this.

I'm having lots of trouble, so thanks in advance for any responses.

Yes, that is a form of artifacting. What you can do is download ATI Tool from www.techpowerup.com and run it's artifact scanning utility while watching your temps (It will tell you those, too). Report back with that data, and we can work from there.

Do you have an overclock running on the card?

I do, actually. I had one using the ForceWare enable from Coolbits, but that for some reason was goofing up. So i scrapped it and went to riva.

The current OC is only 468/701, which was actually the "Optimal settings" from the forceware. I've run it on higher before but i've never tested it thourougly enough to see if i got such errors. And i've seen errors on lower before i think.

My current temp (idle) according to the NVidia control panel is 51C, which is higher than when i first OC'd the card at those settings, when it was running at 47C.

By the way, I installed the newest XG drivers today, the 97.44

Is it possible my system is bottlenecking me at all? Currently my RAM is pretty garbage.

Well here are the ATITool Results:

Ok, it ran for about 2 minutes 40 seconds, and actually got the core WAY the hell up to 555 before i saw myself some artifacting. The heat up process never got it any hotter than 67C

I'm doing the "Scan for artifacts" test now, with the current 555/701 settings and i'm seeing plenty, but i'm not even close to overheating. I've not even broken 70C.

Now i've set all the Cores down to 550, and while the artifacts have greatly reduced, they're still present.

Now, what the hell my entire system just froze for a solid 15 seconds?

Well. Where do i go from here?

I don't know if double posting is frowned upon here, but i thought it was appropriate that people understand the time split here .

Well, i used the ATITool to reset it back to default clock settings (450/660). And started the max memory test. I got it all the way up to the end of the third heating, 3:40, reaching a temp of 76C at 771Mhz for the memory. I will do the same for my core, again, starting from default.

There were no errors, by the way, in the memory test.

Ok, as i was tabbing back to ATITools to run the core test and as i did i got the same type of error i was getting before, with the vertical blotchy dotted stuff. Froze and restart. And here i am. Lucky firefox saved my post .

Core again got up to 550MHz when i saw the very first artifact.

Turn down your clock/memory until you get no artifacts in ATI Tool. Artifacts arn't necessary caused by high temps, but high temps do cause artifacts. Unstable clock speeds might be stable enough to continue running windows but you will see graphical errors.

The 'Scan for Artifacts' is what you want to use to test if your OC is good or not, not just your temps.
