Ridiculously slow WiFi, please help!

Hey OCN

I recently moved into my college town apartment, and I've been experiencing near dial-up speeds over WiFi. I'm using a Motorola SB6120 modem, along with a D-Link DIR-850L AC Router. Literally am getting <0.5MB up and down nearly half the day. Other times I'm getting maybe 5-10MB/s max. I'm paying for 25 down and 5 up. Only devices on the network are two Macbooks and two android phones. I'm so beyond frustrated. From what I've researched, my signal is excellent. I've tested one of the Macbooks wired, and I get 30/7 consistently. What could be so off on my router's settings that it is causing this?

The only settings I've tinkered with are the channels at which the signal broadcasts, but I've used defaults and have had the same problem.

Thinking about purchasing a Linksys E2500 to verify problem, but I don't have all that much cash...

Please..... Help.......... Online homework........... Loading............. Forever.......... WHY

Thanks in advance,
leighteam

Do you have a lot of wireless neighbors?
Have you limited your connections to using the 5 GHz band?

When I lived at VT my townhouse hit something like 50-60 neighboring access points which ended up making the 2.4 GHz spectrum pretty horrible.

You can use something like InSSIDer to get an idea of the wireless traffic for your area.

try switching your default channel to either 1-2 or 11-13 most routers remain on default on 6-7 . Its the best test you can do for now since its free.

Since wired work i dont think any neiighbors would be stealing wifi from you otherwise it will happend as well wired thumb.gif

If still no luck consider Beers option

Cheers
