Fix Ubuntu

Thread Starter
I found this site the other day, thought some Ubuntu users on here might find it useful:
https://fixubuntu.com/
Quote:
If you're an Ubuntu user and you're using the default settings, each time you start typing in Dash (to open an application or search for a file on your computer), your search terms get sent to a variety of third parties, some of which advertise to you.

Ubuntu should protect user privacy by default. Since it doesn't, you can use the code [on fixubuntu.com] to disable the privacy invasive parts of Ubuntu.

I kind of can see Mark's dilema but at the same time if he wants Ubuntu to make money he should try a different approach. And yes, attacking the website through the means he did was pretty petty.

I tend to agree with most people that it should either have an opt in or opt out option during or directly after install. Such a simple option would make everyone happy on the privacy concern. Aside from the RMS fanatic type of people that simply believe no such system should even exist, even if there are people that may like and use it.

He didn't. Canonicals legal team did. As petty as it may have been, they're just a business trying to protect their intellectual property. And it may have very well been an honest mistake on whoever is in charge of that. I'm sure they go through countless websites seeing as the letter that was sent seemed to be pretty much copy and paste material and not a personal letter to the owner of fixubuntu ( judging by the way it was written ).

But him owning up to the mistake and publicly apologizing is the best thing he could have done in the situation with how it panned out.

The lens thing of Ubuntu is blown way out of proportion I think. The website clearly tells you that type anything into the search box and out comes results from across the web. Put 2 and 2 together, anyone who can't figure that out shouldn't be installing an OS. Combine that with people generally thinking Google is the second coming when they don't even tell you up front what they are doing. It's buried in the TOS somewhere. Let's be honest, who reads those things. "You are the product" with any free service or thing as someone here on OCN said once (can't remember who or where I saw it).

Is it a big deal because it's Ubuntu? Everyone seems to hate on it. Generally is that the only reason this is such a big deal? Seems a bit ridiculous to love one and hate the other when both do the exact same thing.
