1TB HDD showing as 250gb

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so recently i had a good friend of mine give me a 1TB WD green hard drive. and as i was loading windows 8.1 onto this drive i thought i would reformat. after the format with the windows disk i saw that there was only 250gb of space and it did not show as a WD drive but a hitachi............but the drive clearly said 1TB WD on the lable. So i load the OS anyway and thought i could just extend the drive. well when i got into disk management there was ZERO extra space and when i went to extend\shrink it showed only 250gb worth of space. So i called my buddie and said DUB-TEE-EFF?!

He tells me that he took the drive out of an external enclosure and tried to use it as a HDD for his xbox360.
Well the xbox360 will only accept a 250gb external from what he tells me. so he tried to make multiple partions and a bunch of other non-sense.

So im kind of at a loss here. i saw some recovery software on WD site but i could not get it to recognize the drive

does anyone know whats going on with this thing......or am i just getting trolled hardcore by my friend...

any information would be appreciated. thanks!

reformat it but unclick the fast format. format in windows with another disk being your os drive. see what happens

This sounds like the drive has been split into 2 partitions (250gb and 750gb) like what Linux does if you install it twice on the same drive?

You might need something like HDAT2, which enables you to remove artificial size limitations. It's a DOS based freebie available on a bootable ISO.

So I got hdat2 working and all but now it tells me DCO Frozen: enabled- this command will be aborted. And I literally canot do anything to this drive. Any way to disable the dco frozen?

I thought Xbox360 only allowed Microsoft branded drives and that to use a different drive you had to do all kinds of stuff to try and trick the xbox into thinking that the drive was a supported model. He may have caused this by doing something trying to get it to work.

You can try diskpart and clean, but if he really did some low level or firmware stuff you may be stuck.

Yeah i will speak to him about it some more. As far as i know he used a program to convert this WD drive to a hitachi drive with a 250GB limit. Hdat2 shows that there is a size limitation error + the DCO frozen. so restoring the drive is not an option at this point. Iv ran all other tests i can with this HDAT tool and it shows the drive is fine. Iv also done a few hours worth of research and am not finding any results..Should i contact WD and see if they can help? Or is that diskpart tool you mentioned any better?!

Perhaps WD can supply you with a new firmware to flash. If he somehow managed to get a Hitachi/hacked firmware on there, then surely there is a way to get a WD firmware back on there.

How many partitions does the drive show? Also if the drive is partitioned and not formatted it won't show you the non formatted partitions.

What you have to do is delete all partitions first and then format the drive.
