290/290X Black Screen Poll

Hi all,

I have 2 rigs in my house, Both with 290x one XFX & One Sapphire running Elpdia memory, Which are flawless. Ek block on one and air on the other, 1150core & 1350memory clock.

Had them since 1st November, Put down 10+ Hours BF4 @ 2560x1440 and 6+ Hours furmark as well as various Heaven & Valley benches.

They both have Asrock Fatal1ty Z77 Motherboard UEFI.

However, I've been seeing a lot of posts about the "Black Screen" And they seem to be more towards the "Elpdia" memory or the people with "Hynix" Just have not spoken up yet.

Now, I want you to answer the poll AFTER testing LEGACY if you black screen and/or updating your motherboard bios.

If you have a UEFI Bios, Change it to Legacy mode and see if you still black screen.

Then please answer the poll.

The reason behind this, Various googling has lead me to believe that it may not be a card issue.
But I'd just like to test my theory. So a POLL

Sorry if this post is a little confusing, Running on a spare of the moment theory.
Started this because I've seen easily 50+ posts around forums people saying they want to RMA their card yet I have 2 in my house that are running beyond amazingly.

To be honest the only time I've seen a black screen on my Sapphire R9 290 (Elpida) is when I've overclocked both core and memory; I can either run the core at 1250Mhz stable or the memory at 6600Mhz, or 1200/6000 at 1.325V (Asus 290x bios). This is on water. Temps never go beyond 50c.

Stock PowerColor 290X with Hynix memory. Only had black screens when using GPU-Z. Ever since removing that software, never had black screen issues.

Elpida chips.

Can play 1 hour or 5 min until i get a blackscreen.

Really sucks for us early adopters, last time i buy a AMD card at launch. :\
Same here. Just finished W7 install. Installed AMD driver and black screen failure within 15 minutes.

Can you use GPU-z in logging mode and see what the temps read out right before the next blackscreen?

Has anyone tried upping the core voltages by 100mV or similar? Ive had 580s do exactly this in the past with BF3 (similar game engine to BF4) and by slightly upping the core voltage, the problem went away. I was kind of thinking that the cards were getting vdroop during clock ramp up and by fixing and upping the core volts, it certainly fixed it. That is, 3 or 4 crashes per day, to none for over 2 years.

Food for thought?

You mean the Power Limit? That doesn't help, like I said, I even underclocked the GPU to as low as 800/1000 and even that didn't help. I am sure it's not unstable Memory because when the card works I can easily do 1125/1500 on default voltages, pretty sure it has something to do with faulty cards or drivers, hoping the 2nd one.

It honestly feels like that form goes directly to the garbage. Not once have I ever had an issue solved by filling out that form. Not once have I ever gotten a response from that form.

Stuff like this is my #1 complaint with AMD. They really should monitor their forms and respond. If this were Nvidia ManualG would have given some sort of update by now.

If AMD isn't aware of this issue they are completely out of touch. There are threads about this very issue on every tech forum on the web.

This is exactly why people are willing to pay a little more for an equivalent Nvidia product.

Well the form does indicate they are in touch, hence the form. They are centralizing it for data collection that can be analyzed where you can't do that from multiple sources as quickly.

On a side note: I don't think this is a good place to start outside opinions as this thread should remain on topic for those with these issues per thread starters intention, as owners would like to find the common denominator and we shouldn't derail it. Many other places / threads for that on OCN.

Yeah, well... The problem with that form is that people aren't using Catalyst 13.9. (It doesn't even support the R9 cards. If they were, well easy to see where their problems come from

)

They're using Catalyst 13.11 Beta v9.2.

And here is the form belonging to it:

I allready retuned my 290X to the shop I bought it from, they will send me new 290x soon (when they are in stock again, but I got them to agree with me that the card is broken). I also got a response from AMD on the blackscreen problem. No reponse from Club3D yet. Hope it helps some one.

So Im very curious to see if the new 290x will have the same issues or not. I'll post again when I have more.

Dear X,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200566803]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

I understand that you get blackscreen when playing BF4. If this is incorrect, please let me know as the information provided may change.

In fact a lot of users have suffered this issue and I recommend you to have a clean installation of your driver first. Here I provide some methods which you can try.

1. I. Please remove existing graphic drivers completely using third party tool driver sweeper. You can down Driver Fusion by this link.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/driver_fusion_(driver_sweeper),1.html

Before beginning the uninstall/reinstallation process, please run Windows Update to ensure that there are no outstanding recommended/required updates, especially updates for the .Net or C++ frameworks, or Service Pack updates. This will ensure that our software will run properly. You may need to run Windows Update and restart multiple times, as certain updates will not appear in the list of updates until certain previous updates have been installed first.
Please keep in mind that Driver Fusion is in no associate or maintained by AMD and is used at the user's discretion.

II. Run Driver Fusion and select all of the ATI filters then start.

III. Restart the computer when it finished.

2. Download and install the 13.11 beta v9.2 driver. These two links may help. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GraphicsDriverInstallationInstructionforMicrosoftWindows7.aspx

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/amd_catalyst_13.11_betav9.2.exe

3. Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for available BIOS / chipset driver updates.
4. Reinstall Microsoft DirectX or install the latest version. This link may help.
