if this is a voltage, ram speed tuning issue, shouldnt it be fixed with bios updates instead of new drivers?

As someone else mentioned in this thread, it is the stupid powertune feature that keeps shifting the clocks of the core and memory up and down. That should be controlled by the driver rather than the BIOS. I've tried different BIOS versions from different vendors and they are all pretty much the same apart from setting the core and memory clocks to different values.

Just take a look at this from Toms Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290-and-290x,3728-4.html

Look at those power spikes, 365w!

Yes, a bios update would be the easiest fix.
At first, it would SEEM like a fix would be for them to simply change the IDLE 2D voltage to start at 1.00v (the same as the current Aux voltage (memory bus voltage).
That SHOULD fix 90% of the black screen issues. Then the 1.00v would naturally scale up depending on the offset voltage (adding offset would naturally raise this starting voltage)

1.00 FIXED would never work, since then you would --never-- be able to overclock the memory much at all.

But that is part of the root of the problem; each card has a different VID depending on GPU quality, and there is a 'voltage range' from the 3D VId to the 2D voltage, like, 0.953v to 1.203v

It looks like the voltage range between 2D to 3D is 0.250v on most or all cards. So raising this range would also raise the 3D voltages as well as the low limit of the 2d voltage, which would make your card run hotter.

Maybe a complete recoding of the Bios to change this to 0.200v would prevent that problem. Then a 1.203v 3d Vid card would still run at 1.203v in 3D, but would run at 1.003v in 2D (and rising based on the offset). That seems like the best solution.

There's only 1 update that will fix the blackscreens, and that's a product update rolleyes.gif

4 weeks now with my new Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X, and not a single black screen smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

I tried that. Asus service doesnt think its a hardware fault. Now i have to find a solution .

Tough i 'm going to wait for a driver, bios update. If it doesnt fix it, i'm just going to buy Nvidia and send the card back to Asus. And i will keep sending it back until they understand its a hw fault . (actually it doesnt matter if its a hw or bios/driver problem, card doesnt work properly)

My RMA also got returned back with nothing wrong, but I've been emailing them to try again.

Underclock the memory by 100MHz from 1250 to 1150 that fixes my issues. At least I can use the card now until the issue gets resolved.

Did you increase the 2D settings in GPU Tweak?
I'm about to try the new beta drivers. If itdoesnt work. I will increase the 2D settings in GPU Tweak.

But user shouldnt have to hack the settings in order to make it work. If it doesnt work properly with the default settings, than the card should be replaced by the manufacturer.

Next time , i will just buy Nvidia.

Just a tiny update on Powercolor honoring RMA's. Even though Newegg's return window expired, they still accepted the card back when i called them. But i filed a ticket with Powercolor the day before. Powercolor just emailed me back finally a cpl hours ago. It looks like they're at least willing to RMA the black screen cards if it came to it. Thought this might be useful info to somebody

Dear User,

1.      Please try update MB BIOS to the newest version.

2.      Please check your ATX power supply, the R9 290x needs a 750 watt or better power supply with one 6-pin PCIe and one 8-pin power connectors. Certified power supplies are strongly recommended; for a list of certified power supplies, please see http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/power-supplies

3.      Please try install the newest beta graphic driver from AMD website: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-catalyst-windows-beta.aspx Removing all old graphic driver before installing new driver is recommend.

4.      If problem still exist after above checking step, please do a RMA service. If you need a RMA service, please contact your dealer for RMA services, they are supposed to take care of your RMA request; if your dealer is no longer in service or can’t provide you services, please go to http://www.powercolor.com/us/support_rmaservice.asp  then following steps to get RMA service. Thanks

Interesting that they know the latest Beta drivers help, it proves that they are aware of the problem and AMD are trying to fix it behind closed doors.

So far only BF4 has problems for me, if it stays that way then I might just keep the card as I've finished the game and have no plans to play online.
