Download gpu-z, that should give u memory info

did you even read my post? I don't have one yet. don't think gpu-z gives info for cards not in your system. I want to buy one with good mem. I think the MSI Gaming edition cards all have the Hynix I read that somewhere, but someone should compile a master list.

I thought you were not sure so i gave u the software name. Anyways, the same website where you would download gpu-z (techpowerup) has a database of gpu bios. Click on the bios info of any card u choose and that'll show u memory info. That's the best info i have. I hope it helps. Enjoy

4096 MB, GDDR5, Hynix H5GQ2H24AFR
4096 MB, GDDR5, Elpida EDW2032BBBG

Here's some info that could help some of you with this issue:

My card (hynix) black screened about 6-7 times when I first got it. Most of the time it blacked out when I open up a new program or doing the windows performance rating in system. I think it went black twice during benchmark. I remember it did it once when I opened up GPU-Z and several times when I was surfing on chrome.

I started making list of all the things I can do to fix it, and somewhere along the line, the black screen just went away. I don't know if it's something I did or not to be honest.

Now that I think about it, it's most likely when I set all my PCIe slots to Gen3 (default was Gen2). Anything in BIOS with 'UEFI', I changed to 'LEGACY'. This was the first thing I did after trying out different drivers (Both black screened: 14.3 and 13.11 beta 9.5).

I didn't get any black screen after that. Not even during 4 days of overclocking my CPU and 3 days for GPU.

Other things I did (after black screen seems to have gone away):

1. Disable ULPS in regedit and Afterburner
2. Plug in extra 4-pin molex for PCIe on my motherboard (EVGA x79 FTW), (2x 8-pin CPU were plugged in also, but I was getting black screen with them from the start. So, I don't think that was the issue in my case)
3. Other things on my check list that I was going to try: Up VGPU core voltage, Set power limit to +50 or -5, up Aux (mem) voltage to +50 in Afterburner.

I'm running 4.5Ghz 4820K and my 290 is at 1119/1450 with +100 core mV, +50% power limit, and +13 mV AUX with no issue. Stock setting is fine as well. I'm using 14.4 driver as of now.

Hope this info helps some of you. Good luck. thumb.gif

I don't think there's really an easy way for you to know, many gpu models use more than 1 memory brand and that's for a good reason. But that database sort of gives you an idea what to expect at least.

If you stick with MSI brand, I think (this isn't confirmed) that they have it coded into the serial number. Nomenclature is xxx - xxxx - YYYxxxxxxxx...where YYY is the memory code. I have seen two lightning serial numbers (780 and 290x), substantiated by the BIOS MSI has sent me:

03S & 04S appears to be Samsung (my 290x right now is 04S)
05S & 06S hynix
07S & 08S elpida (i bought a DOA 780 before, it had 07S)

that's just my assumption and neither confirmed by MSI nor anyone. I'm sure other manufacturers do have specific nomenclature and embedded the memory type in it.

this is my 2nd lightning, the first one was a 780 and it's defective so i had to return it. Now I bought a 290x, a little better than previous but still not working as expected. What do you think about my chances of getting a golden chip if i exchange this with another lightning? biggrin.gif

i may be the wrong one to ask 'cause i am not a hardcore bencher. this card is designed for benching - i mean the use of ln2. imo, you can't judge its performance based on the normal bios and stock air cooler. look at the names of the members of the club . . . they are mostly benchers.

No i understand. That question was sort of rhetorical. True, this card is for benching, but you're not gonna go anywhere if you keep getting black screen. Hence, my post here on black screen poll, in a way that some readers would see that it also happens on lightning with samsung memory, not just hynix or elpida.

Whether i should RMA this now or not is another story.
