Ok, to properly hook up the wires of a psu to the DFI SLI mobo:

Just to the bottomside of the cpu slot, attach a floppy connector to the 3 pin.
Now attach a 4pin molex to the mobo just above the chipset fan.
Now hook up the 4p and the 24 pin to the upper right side of the mobo.
Do not power on with more than a single stick of ram in the first orange slot (closest to the cpu).
Hold delete key, enter bios, save defaults . If you cant get into bios, the previous settings may be too much for the new psu.

Okay I can't find any reason, but there are several warnings on DFI-street that say do not use a 20 to 24 pin adapter, because not enough power will be provided.

Sorry but an adapter might be a short term solution but is advised against by all those who are familiar with high end DFI mobos.
The manufacturer has advised against it.

All those connectors are required to provide the proper amount of juice to the mobo for a reason.
The 400w psu might get it to boot, but wont be reliable.
If you can get into bios to "optimize defaults" hit enter, reboot, re-enter bios and set parameters, add extra ram, etc..... gl

If you cant boot up, try a CMOS reset: turn off computer, unplug it, remove small battery from mobo, move cmos jumper over to opposite pins, wait 15 secs., replace jumper, and battery, plug in, turn on, resave optimal settings in bios.
