Google is not forcing you to share their "worldwide view". The amount of trolling and asinine comments on YouTube was an embarrassment to the community and to Google themselves.
This way, people can't hide their bigoted, sexist and racist comments behind anonymity and that's a good thing.
In a perfect world this would actually mean something, but in the real world this means nothing.
You can make a google plus account with any name you want and not add any friends or family. Before the new comment system, youtube was pretty bad but you have to remember, every single change youtube has ever made resulted in HUGE backlash from the community(sub box changes, layout changed, etc). They love to fight about something, but changing the comments section was possibly the worst change they could have made, 90% of youtube appears to be mindless and childish people who will complain about anything. When that change is the comments, where is a better place to post your distaste for it? In the comments.
I am not saying this is going to go on for forever, but every day I have gotten on youtube since this change there has been a different little trend going around that makes up the majority of comments. Started with just a bunch of the unlimited length comments, then it switched to the ascii art, then the screamers and porn links, then it was people making links look like the option to view more of a comment, then came the self promoters and trolls who made top comment by responding to their own comments 100 times. Now today it has been the little character or the tanks.
Just because the comments are linked to google plus doesn't mean anything, the people who were trolls before are going to continue being trolls with throw away google plus accounts. Unless google can make you link some sort of information that can be verified, like linking a credit card or something(which would never happen), nothing is going to change in the comments.
The other problem with the new comments is that they don't need to be thumbed up to get top comment so every hateful comment that gets a lot of responses gets to the top which is terrible.
I am not saying the last comment system was good, it was quite the opposite to the point where I have almost entirely refused to comment on any video in the past 5 or so years because every comment you leave seems to only be responded to by trolls or jerks who want to start an internet fight for no reason. The last system didn't work and neither does this one, but if it was my choice, I would keep the old system.
Absolutely nothing has changed the trolls or hateful people, if anything this system has given them a bigger voice since they can get themselves top comment by getting a lot of responses on it, be it their own comments or others.
I am not even going to get into how bad the ease of use is (timestamps open in new tabs, clicking a comment responding to another opens in another tab, etc)
Face it, the "youtube community" is never going to be positive, you can't change the people who comment.Edited by HPE1000 - 11/13/13 at 8:14pm
